CASE STUDY 1: You are working in a community health centre n a regional city. You have many clients from Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultures to care for. Some are of different languages, and you have three colleagues to work with. One day when you are providing personal care needs to one of your Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultures client, your colleagues made some remarks related to racism and stereotyping the indigenous Australians under your care.

Case study 2

The Aged Care Facility you work in has many staff members from different ethnic backgrounds. It is Australia Day, and the facility is celebrating with a sausage sizzle. Kate is a support worker from Argentina and is new to the facility. She is very assertive. She is bringing clients from their rooms to the courtyard. Mrs Fatima refuses, saying it is her praying time. Mrs Fatima informs Kate that she will take another twenty (20) minutes before coming to the event. Kate tells her that she will be helping with the cooking, and she will not come back to help Mrs Fatima. Kate walks out of Mrs Fatima’s room without waiting for her response.

Mrs Fatima became upset with Kate’s arrogant attitude. You overheard the conversation and saw Kate walking out of Mrs Fatima’s room. 1)Demonstrate how you would support Mrs Fatima in this scenario.

After hearing the racist comment, I will report the matter to HR. I will share the details in the format with HR and the team leader so that strict action can be taken. In addition, I would try to counsel the client under care and will assure them that such things will not happen to them again. If prompt action will not be taken then I will raise the issue to EEOC and they will investigate the matter (Karimi, Leggat,  Bartram & Rada, 2020). It will also call for legal actions against the colleague and employer if the case found to be substantiated.

To ensure cultural safety model is practiced at workplace it is important to understand the gaps between perceived cultural biasness and existing cultural awareness (Pickles, Lacey & King, 2019). The cultural awareness about different cultures should be discussed and work on communication techniques will be done on continuous basis to show respect towards indigenous people.

I believe taking the stand against the discrimination requires courage. Talking to seniors about the matter convincingly requires presentation of communication skills. While discussing the experience with the team manager, I have to make sure that I am not sounding overly emotional and able to transfer the pain of client to the manager (Penman et.al, 2022). I will also check with other colleagues if anyone else have also witnessed the incident and can voice over it with me.
