Sensation is the process through which we gather information about our environment and
su
oundings. Sensation is the initial process of perception. Sensation is a response to some
stimulus. Usually there are five sense organs in animals: eyes, nose, ear, tongue and skin to
perceive five senses sight, smell, sound, taste and touch respectively. Several stimuli excite the
eceptors within these sense organs so that they can acquire the knowledge about su
oundings.
Perception results from a complex interaction between sense organs and
ain. The sense organs
only allow us to gather information they don’t aid us to interpret these observations. Actually
they send these data to the
ain which process these data and give an interpretation. The process
of interpretation of these data is called perception. Perception is variable not static- changes –it
changes according to individual, society and times.
Sensation and perception is two major, reliable tools to understand our environment.
Without these two things our life is meaningless. For our sensation and perception we have to
elive on our sense organs and perceptions. But sometimes they fail to transmit accurate data to
the
ain. During illness, drowsiness, or in exhausted condition the senses tend to be inefficient.
At times senses are accurate in terms of delivery but things are not as they appear. Infants’
normally first sense before a thought occurs but in the case of adults, thinking and sensing occurs
simultaneously (Ki
y & Goodpaster, 2007).
There are several factors on which accuracy of perceptual sensation depends.
Reasons for believing accuracy of sensory information:
 Sensory information is achieved as primary information from our sense organs.
For example: we can see our su
ounding through our eyes. The images are
formed...
