What we want to see:
The work must be fully referenced with in-text citations and a reference list at the end. We
ecommend you work with your Academic Writing Guide to ensure that you reference co
ectly. You
will find a link to this document on the main page of every unit, under the 'Assessments' section.
Co
ect academic writing and referencing are essential tasks that you need to learn. We
ecommend a minimum of ten references.
Referencing: References are assessed for their quality. You should draw on quality academic
sources, such as books, chapters from edited books, journals etc. Your textbook can be used as a
eference, but not the Study Guide and lecture notes. We want to see evidence that you are capable
of conducting your own research. Also, in order to help markers determine students’ understanding
of the work they cite, all in-text references (not just direct quotes) must include the specific page
numbe
s if shown in the original.
Researching: You can search for peer-reviewed journal articles, which you can find in the online
journal databases and which can be accessed from the li
ary homepage. Reputable news sites
such as The Conversation (https:
theconversation.com/au/health), online dictionaries and online
encyclopedias are acceptable as a starting point to gain knowledge about a topic. Government
departments, research institutes such as the National Health and Medical Research Council
(NHMRC), international organisations such as the World Health Organisation (WHO) and local not
for profit organisations such as the Cancer Council are also good resources.
Formatting: The assessment MUST be submitted electronically in Microsoft Word format. Other
formats may not be readable by markers. Please be aware that any assessments submitted in other
formats will be considered LATE and will lose marks until it is presented in Word.
What we don’t want to see:
Plagiarism: All sources of information need to properly be acknowledged. Please refer to the
plagiarism website on blackboardi. By clicking the 'Upload this file' button you acknowledge that you
have read, understood and can confirm that the work you are about to submit complies with the
Flexible and Online plagiarism policy as shown in the JNI Student Handbook. Like other forms of
cheating plagiarism is treated seriously. Plagiarising students will be refe
ed to the Program
Manager.
Word Count: Marks will be deducted for failure to adhere to the word count – as a general rule you
may go over or under by 10% than the stated length.
Late Submissions: Students are advised that any submissions past the due date incur a 10%
penalty per day, calculated from the total mark e.g. a task marked out of 30 will incur 3 marks

Introduction
In the US, around 20 to 22 million people have an addiction to drugs and alcohol. The efforts were made from centuries for reducing addiction and the costs associated with by giving punishment of the addictive behaviours failed in producing ample result, recently the clinical research has proved that addiction is better regarded and treated like acquired disease of the
ain. The
ain disease model of addiction has guided results that results in developing the methods that are effectual in preventing and treating and the much-informed policies of public health.
However, though there are scientific evidence as well as the advancement in treating and changing policies, the idea of addiction as a
ain disease is questioned until now. The idea of addiction to be a
ain disease deeply challenges ingrained values regarding personal responsibilities and self-determination by which the using drug is framed as a hedonistic and voluntary act. Such idea of addiction as a disease of the
ain observed to some for excusing personal i
esponsibility and acts of criminal rather than punishing illegal and harmful behaviours.
Implications of the
ain disease model of addiction for prevention and treatment
Disease progression can is contributed by unhealthful behaviours for example heart disease, lung cancer, chronic pain, and diabetes, the aim of interventions based on evidence is at prevention and also the proper policies of public health, as the very effective method to change outcomes (Volkow, Koob and McLellan 2016). Further understanding of the
ain disease model of addiction comprehensively can be helpful in moderating some moral judgments attached to addictive behaviours and fostering more public and scientific approaches oriented for health to prevent and treat (Volkow and Morales 2015).

Behavioural and Medical Interventions
Addiction has been found to be a disease by neurobiological research that is emerging gradually, and it has its predominant onset at the time of specific period of risk: adolescence. Adolescence is a period while the
ain is still developing and is sensitive to the impact of drugs, a factor contributing to high vulnerability of experimenting drug by the adolescents and being addicted (Volkow and Koob 2015). Adolescence is a time of increased neuroplasticity when neural networks that are underdeveloped is important for adult-level judgement and is not able to regulating emotion properly. It has also shown in the study that adolescents and children with evidence of functional and structural changes in frontal cortical areas or with novelty traits impulsivity or to seek are at high chances for disorders using substances. Knowledge of an individual and factors of social risk and identifying the signs early regarding substance-use problems making it probable of tailoring strategies to prevent to the patient. As per the research associated with
ain disease model of addiction, preventive interventions must be made for enhancing the social skills and improving self-regulation (Hall, Carter and Forlini 2015). Early screening and intervening prodromal presentation of psychological disorder and providing social opportunities for educating personally and developing emotionally are also very important. When there was a failure of prevention and the treatment is needed, it has been shown by the research on the basis of the
ain disease model of addiction that medical treatment is helpful in restoring healthy function in the impacted circuitry of
ain and result in improvements in behavior (Elman and Borsook 2016). The health care system already consists at its disposal many...
