What we want to see:
The work must be fully referenced with in-text citations and a reference list at the end. We
ecommend you work with your Academic Writing Guide to ensure that you reference co
ectly. You
will find a link to this document on the main page of every unit, under the 'Assessments' section.
Co
ect academic writing and referencing are essential tasks that you need to learn. We
ecommend a minimum of ten references.
Referencing: References are assessed for their quality. You should draw on quality academic
sources, such as books, chapters from edited books, journals etc. Your textbook can be used as a
eference, but not the Study Guide and lecture notes. We want to see evidence that you are capable
of conducting your own research. Also, in order to help markers determine students’ understanding
of the work they cite, all in-text references (not just direct quotes) must include the specific page
numbe
s if shown in the original.
Researching: You can search for peer-reviewed journal articles, which you can find in the online
journal databases and which can be accessed from the li
ary homepage. Reputable news sites
such as The Conversation (https:
theconversation.com/au/health), online dictionaries and online
encyclopedias are acceptable as a starting point to gain knowledge about a topic. Government
departments, research institutes such as the National Health and Medical Research Council
(NHMRC), international organisations such as the World Health Organisation (WHO) and local not
for profit organisations such as the Cancer Council are also good resources.
Formatting: The assessment MUST be submitted electronically in Microsoft Word format. Other
formats may not be readable by markers. Please be aware that any assessments submitted in other
formats will be considered LATE and will lose marks until it is presented in Word.
What we don’t want to see:
Plagiarism: All sources of information need to properly be acknowledged. Please refer to the
plagiarism website on blackboardi. By clicking the 'Upload this file' button you acknowledge that you
have read, understood and can confirm that the work you are about to submit complies with the
Flexible and Online plagiarism policy as shown in the JNI Student Handbook. Like other forms of
cheating plagiarism is treated seriously. Plagiarising students will be refe
ed to the Program
Manager.
Word Count: Marks will be deducted for failure to adhere to the word count – as a general rule you
may go over or under by 10% than the stated length.
Late Submissions: Students are advised that any submissions past the due date incur a 10%
penalty per day, calculated from the total mark e.g. a task marked out of 30 will incur 3 marks
penalty per day.
No submission: Students must attempt all tasks to be eligible to pass the unit.

Introduction
Mental health is one of the important factors, which can affect the well-being of the person. A person is considered healthy when its physical, biological and mental condition is sound. Mental health can be defined as a state of well-being in which every person knows his or her own potential so that, they can cope with the normal stresses of life. A sound mental health allows the person to work productively and fruitfully. A mentally sound and healthy person can make a contribution to the community (WHO, 2019). According to The Australian Bureau of Statistics, around 20.1% of Australians are suffering from mental health disorder between year 2017 and 2018. It is 2.6% higher than 2014 and 2015 (WHO, 2019).
It has been observed that wide range of population is suffering from various kinds of mental disorders. These mental disorders vary from depression, anxiety, clinical depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder and schizophrenia. Australians are either suffering from long time mental disorder or they have faced mental illness in some point of their life (WHO, 2019). It has been observed that women experienced high rate of mental disorder in comparison to the men. Apart from this, some of them discovered their mental disorder after taking part in surveys or; when severe symptoms had been observed in their body. Over the period of time, people suffering from mental illness for long time can suffered from diseases such as depression or dementia. The following essay analyses the attitude of Australian towards mental health.
Cu
ent Attitudes to Mental Health in Australia
Occu
ence of Mental Illness in Australia
The National health survey estimated that around 20% of the Australians suffered from mental illness in 2017, which was 2.6% higher in 2014 (Parliament of Australia, 2019). The rate of mental illness is constantly increasing as people regularly reporting the anxiety-related disorder, depression or clinical depression. This data includes the report of mental or behavioural condition. Around 14% young people aged between 4 and 17 years experienced mental disorder (Australian Government, 2019). Poor mental health resulted in rise in the suicidal tendency of the people. In 2017, around 3,128 people have shown the suicidal tendencies due to poor mental condition.
Attitude of Australian People towards Mental Health
Common Australian people have stigma towards the mental illness, which prevent them to diagnose or treat their problem. People who had been diagnosed with mental illness either faced stigma or treated differently. Although, stigma related to this illness is neither true nor right but it has severe impact on the people suffering from the disorder (Sane Australia, 2019). As suggested by Knaak, Mantler and Szeto (2017), stigma towards mental illness act as a ba
ier for the treatment and care, which must be given to the needed person. Even living in modern era, people used to avoid the discussion about mental illness. There is a lack of awareness related to the mental illness among people.
As suggested by Semrau et al. (2015), mental illness stigma can be defined as stigma, which occu
ed when there are negative opinions, stereotype or judgements about anyone in any form of mental illness. People with mental illness are often treated by other person as dangerous, incompetent and crazy, which resulted development of stigma. Stigma often leads to discrimination or bullying or they become victim of violence. As noted by Clement et al. (2015), stigma about mental illness occu
ed because people have lack of awareness about mental illness or mental disorder. It also occu
ed due to negative attitude or belief of the people towards the mental illness.
There are several other factors, which contributed towards development of stigma about mental illness in people. These factors include portraying of social media platform or media outlets to portray mental illness using demeaning or hostile language. As mentioned by Co
igan (2016), Society often treated people with mental illness differently. As a result, person suffering from mental illness either have withdrawal from society, they become lean to drug abuse or alcohol. They can even commit suicide, stayed away from treatment, and lowers the self-esteem.
Attitude of Government towards Mental Illness
As suggested by Thornicroft et al. (2016), Mental illness had become burden of disease in Australia. It accounts for total of 12%. Government of Australia are constantly reforming their policies and take the appropriate measures to reduce mental illness. Since, it is burden of disease on Australia, both governmental and non-governmental agencies played important role in reducing the rate of mental illness. They put effort in increasing the awareness about the disorder. It has been estimated that around $56.7 billion per years spend on mental health (Government of Western Australia Mental Health Commission, 2019). The mental health severely hurt the economy of the nation.
These are direct economic costs, which includes use of healthcare services. Indirect cost includes loss of productivity due to incompetency of people at work (Government of Western Australia Mental Health Commission, 2019). In 2018, mental health Australia report provides the detail about the impact of mental health illness at workplace, which can cost billions to Australian government. As a result, government is pushed to develop strategies to reduce the impact of mental illness on economy. Australian central and state governments are sharing their responsibility. Medicare subsidised the mental health services, which are provided by general practitioners and other professionals.
There is facility of subsidised on prescribed medications for mental health. Various...
