The study analyzes the factors affecting the prevalence of PTSD in Nurses and addresses the preventive measures to mitigate the problem. It evaluates compares and contrasts the four relevant Nursing Journal articles on the topic and explores their content to find the answer to research question. The structure of the study involves: Introduction, research question, a
ief summary of the four nursing Journal articles on PTSD, Comparing and contrasting the Findings, and Conclusion.
All the four articles used for the analysis are peer reviewed nursing journals addressing the problem of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in Nurses.
Introduction
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a Psychological Health condition with symptoms of flashback and anxiety, initiated by a traumatic event (National Institute of Mental Health [NIMH], 2019). Nursing Journal by Mealer, Jones & Meek (2017) provides evidence of development of PTSD among Nurses especially in Critical Care Units due to cumulative exposure to stress and traumatic incidents. The focus of the four Primary Research articles compared in this study is to identify the factors affecting the prevalence of PTSD in Nurses and addressing the preventive measures to mitigate the problem.
Research Question: What are the factors affecting development of PTSD in Nurses?
Brief Summary of Resources
According to the Nursing Journal by Mealer, Jones & Meek (2017), the nurses working at ICUs who had high resilience scores were at 18-50% less risk of suffering from PTSD in comparison to the nurses having low resilience score. The graduate nurses were at greater risk of incepting the PTSD than the nurses having just a bachelor’s degree.
According to a study published in American Nurse Today, (an Official Journal of American Nurse Association) recommends the nurses to combine the professional care with personal care to recover form PTSD. The nurses should identify the symptoms of PTSD like self destructive behavior, hyper vigilance, i
itation, agitation, anxiety, loneliness, guilt, emotional detachment, nightmares, insomnia and unwanted thoughts (American Nurse Today, 2019). They should consult the Primary Care Providers or their employers for help. The condition requires immediate nursing interventions.
