Research Paper: Final Draft
AMERICA IN THE COLD WAR
AnnMarie Persaud
HIS 450 HIS- 450-0500: US History Since 1945
NOV 29, 2020
Introduction
Historical evidence justifies the particular impact of wars on common lives; while wars are waged with technical warfare in the 20th century, the events of the Cold War put the entire trajectory of American and European history at the edge of historians' contradictory notions. [footnoteRef:2]There are two groups that reject the philosophies of the USSR and the United States or endorse them. After the Second World War, the advent of the Soviet Union did something interesting to the rest of the world; it was the beginning of the spread of Communism into Europe.[footnoteRef:3] Therefore this extension was to be limited because of the responsibility that the United States had taken over during and after World War II. However, it was not an easy task to ca
y out control measures against the strong and authoritative military might of the Soviet Union. The Truman government of that time took steps such as the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan to ensure the effectiveness of its policies, which were the indicators of US interventions in Europe and eventually became the points of confrontation in the context of the Cold War in 1947. Sources to the Rise of Diplomatic Intervention
It is important to remember at the beginning that the United States engaged in an aggressive collective security strategy in Europe, which led directly to increasing tensions and started the Cold War.[footnoteRef:4] After the Second World War the United States adopted containment measures that rejected former isolation ideologies in order to maintain global peace. European nations simply did not pay attention to safeguarding their borders with strict authorities when World War II ended and thus enabled the Soviet Union to extend its te
itorial power in Europe. The following review adheres to a postmodern interpretation of this issue, arguing that while the United States did not specifically intend to
ing about the Cold War, the containment policies of Europe were unjustified and contributed to an unnecessary escalation of tensions.[footnoteRef:5] Under Truman's administration, the United States was able to plead for the needs and aspirations of European nations that were weak in economic and military power and posed a direct threat to the Soviet Union's influence. Therefore the Soviet Union was justified in responding, and this led directly to the beginning of the Cold War.[footnoteRef:6] [4: Pearson My History Lab 2009] [5: Chernus Ira. 2010. “Proclaiming the Truman Doctrine: The Cold War Call to Arms Bostdorff Denise.” Journal of Cold War Studies 12 (3): 121.] [6: Pearson My History Lab 2009]
Truman Doctrine: Impacts, Sources and Consequences
The Truman Doctrine is one of the key principles that historians tend to disagree about; it is the political structure with the assistance of which, in the aftermath of World War II, tensions between the United States and the USSR rose.[footnoteRef:7] In fact, Truman became instrumental in interpreting the role of the United States in foreign affairs with his rise to power in 1947. Communism has already been proven to be one of the biggest challenges to democracy by the aftermath of the Second World War. [footnoteRef:8]Communism's ideals view widening boundaries and gaining absolute power through military interventions. It was also suggested that global alliances would be formed in order to track and control or if necessary, to remove communism from the globe. The Truman Doctrine stands for President Truman's diplomatic conception of the ideal forum where he pursued a global coalition toward the end of communist ideology.[footnoteRef:9] He literally ensured that the United States was against all communist powers and the nation was prepared to engage in any action needed to begin the elimination process. On March 12, 1947, the doctrine was developed and was strengthened on July 4, 1948. The purpose of the doctrine was to avoid the spread of communism during the Cold World War. [footnoteRef:10]The doctrine indicated the support to be provided to other nations, threatened by Soviet geopolitical development, by American support. The Americans, along with their military, offered economic and financial assistance to the citizens of Greece, Turkey and other nations.[footnoteRef:11] [7: Chernus Ira. 2010. “Proclaiming the Truman Doctrine: The Cold War Call to Arms Bostdorff Denise.” Journal of Cold War Studies 12 (3): 121.] [8: Ibid, 2009] [9: Williams, 2017, Revisiting the Cold War in Latin America, Latin American Research Review, 52(5)] [10: Mandelbaum, 2016, Mission Failure: America and the world in the post-Cold War era] [11: Pearson, My History Lab, 2009]
The Truman Doctrine's first major action was to keep South Korea from being united under one flag and one national value, motivated by communist ideals. The invasion resulted in a continuing dispute between the Asian powers and the United States, powers that found uninvited and unexpected foreign interventions on their te
itories. In the international interventions, the monopolistic policy of the United States was somehow visible prior to the thought that in the aftermath of the Second World War the isolation of the United States would take place.[footnoteRef:12] [12: Ibid, 2009]
In addition to the negative ramifications associated with the Truman Doctrine, Truman's intentions were not always toward global growth. There were countries like Greece and Turkey that suffered for economic reasons after the Second World War had ended. In 1947, Greece was in the midst of internal fighting between the government and the Communist rebels. Britain had financed the counte
evolutionaries, but subsequently announced that it could no longer do so for economic reasons. The U.S. government told Congress that the fall of Greece to Communism would inevitably lead to the eventual collapse of Italy, France, and even the Middle East to Communism.[footnoteRef:13] Truman managed to obtain Congressional authorization of $400 million to support anti-Communist rebels in both Greece and Turkey as well. This was the first implementation of what became known as the Truman Doctrine, according to which the U.S. strategy would be to support free individuals who resist attempted subjugation or external pressures by armed minorities.[footnoteRef:14] [13: Ibid, 2009] [14: Pearson, My History Lab, 2009]
The Truman Doctrine was officially focused on economic assistance to the vulnerable people of poor...
