Introduction
Law is an essential public health aspect that plays a critical role in reducing premature death
and illness. Law in Public health infrastructure examines the authority of the
government at various levels of jurisdiction to improve the health of the general
population. It is a preventive measure. Law in Public health focuses on legal issues in
practice of public health. Public health law mainly has three important areas of practice:
police power, disease and injury prevention, and the law of populations. Public health laws
are derived from federal and state constitutions; statutes, and other legislative enactments;
agency rules and regulations; judicial rulings and case law; and policies of public bodies.
Since 1988, Institute of Medicine has given three major reports which includes-
(I) Importance of legal infrastructure to Public Health
(II) Need to review and update laws that define the authorities’ public health agencies.
(III) Attaining public health goals.
Laws in Public Health Infrastructure includes the following aspects-
 Making internal and external control policies so that goals of public health agencies can be
supported.
 Ensuring enforcement of laws and regulations so that health of community can be
preserved.
 Ensuring that policies are implemented in relation to health and new policies are proposed
