Assessment Task:
For this assessment, source a journal article of your choice on recent research about a cu
ent social
issue. The study should have been conducted within the last 5 years. The assessment asks you to
critique the paper by discussing the component parts.

In answering this assessment, students should first
iefly describe the paper, including:

1. the stated rationale and background for the study
2. the aims and objectives of the study
3. an overview of the research methods used, including the techniques for sampling, data
collection and data analysis.

Then, after the above description of the paper, conduct a critical assessment of the methods
used. This should include a critical discussion of the following areas:

1. the overall research design
2. the way key concepts were defined and measured
3. the sampling process
4. the data collection methods
5. the way the data was analysed
6. the approach to interpretation of results
7. ethical issues

In your assessment, discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the methodological approach
showing what could have been done differently and why. Issues of validity and reliability should
also be mentioned.

What we want to see:

The work must be fully referenced with in-text citations and a reference list at the end. We
ecommend you work with your Academic Writing Guide to ensure that you reference co
ectly.
You will find a link to this document on the main page of every unit, under the 'Assessments'
section. Co
ect academic writing and referencing are essential tasks that you need to learn. We
ecommend a minimum of ten references.
Referencing: References are assessed for their quality. You should draw on quality academic
sources, such as books, chapters from edited books, journals etc. Your textbook can be used as a
eference, but not the Study Guide and lecture notes. We want to see evidence that you are capable
of conducting your own research. Also, in order to help markers determine students’
understanding of the work they cite, all in-text references (not just direct quotes) must include the
specific page numbe
s if shown in the original.
Researching: You can search for peer-reviewed journal articles, which you can find in the online
journal databases and which can be accessed from the li
ary homepage. Reputable news sites
such as The Conversation (https:
theconversation.com/au/health), online dictionaries and online
encyclopedias are acceptable as a starting point to gain knowledge about a topic. Government
departments, research institutes such as the National Health and Medical Research Council
(NHMRC), international organisations such as the World Health Organisation (WHO) and local not
for profit organisations such as the Cancer Council are also good resources.
Formatting: The assessment MUST be submitted electronically in Microsoft Word format. Other
formats may not be readable by markers. Please be aware that any assessments submitted in other
formats will be considered LATE and will lose marks until it is presented in Word.

What we d o n ’ t want to see:

Plagiarism: All sources of information need to properly be acknowledged. Please refer to the
plagiarism website on blackboardi. By clicking the 'Upload this file' button you acknowledge that
you have read, understood and can confirm that the work you are about to submit complies with
the Flexible and Online plagiarism policy as shown in the JNI Student Handbook. Like other forms
of cheating plagiarism is treated seriously. Plagiarising students will be refe
ed to the Program
Manager.
Word Count: Marks will be deducted for failure to adhere to the word count – as a general rule
you may go over or under by 10% than the stated length.
Late Submissions: Students are advised that any submissions past the due date incur a 10%
penalty per day, calculated from the total mark e.g. a task marked out of 30 will incur 3 marks
penalty per day.
No submission: Students must attempt all tasks to be eligible to pass the unit.

The case study chosen for the report:
Three Approaches to Understanding and Classifying Mental Disorder: ICD-11, DSM-5, and the National Institute of Mental Health’s Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) (Clark et al, 2017)
Review of the chosen Paper:
I. The stated rationale
Classification of mental diseases have been made by the three highly acclaimed manuals, the DSM, the ICD and NIMHRD, the latter two primarily based in the US. In the journal by Clark et al., (2017) the research rationale was to indentify the key issues that still existed while classifying the mental disorders. These included critical analysis of four major criteria that were used by these three manuals, which were etiology, threshold, co-mo
idity and categories or dimensions. Using the four major categories classification system was compared depending on the causality of each disease, whether the disease prognosis was a relevant phenomenon that could be used, understanding the boundaries between the disordered condition and the non disorders and finally to access whether the incidence of mental disorders has a positive relationship with other diagnostic diseases.
II. The Background for the study
The classification of Mental Health disorders varies between the types of symptoms presented and the underlying disease prognosis. Given the symptoms of a person and the signs of illness, a physician makes a diagnosis based on which prescription medications, psychotherapy and other treatments are given to the patient. In the last decade, research has increased the expanse of knowledge regarding mental health disorders and their classifications. Yet underlying mechanisms about their components and mechanisms are not fully known to us. Similarly, the basis of classification was also made a long time back. Two commonly used diagnostic manuals have been critically analyzed for this research. They are the internationally used manual called “International Classification of Diseases”; “National Institute of Mental Health’s Research Domain Criteria” and the other, which is primary, based on the demographics in the United States known as “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders”.
Both these manuals are suitable and classify a mental health disorder that is relevant to clinical diagnosis, public health care, service proposition and specific research applications. For this given case study, Clark et al., (2017) have critically analyzed the classification basis of each of the three manuals and have tried to put forward the challenges and limitations prevalent in each of the journals. They have also made sure to add the gaps in the existing literature along with the future directions that can be taken up from the point onwards. This research is fruitful not only for the diagnosis of mental disorders or neurological diseases but also determine the general classification of each disease provided in these manuals.
III. The aims and objectives of the study
    With the cu
ent theme in mind, the primary aim of the research conducted by Clark et al, (2017) was to compare and contrast between the three disease manuals that provided classification of mental health diseases, based on the factors that could have influenced the. The comparison was based on the geographical location of the country where the manuals were published or took their data from, their histories, influence of their constituencies and the purpose for classification into account. Even though all three journals indeed had quite some overlap on, their classification basis and the primary purpose of reducing the burden of suffering because of mental health problems, yet each had also few distinguishing features that set them apart.
Based on the research aim, the cu
ent study aims to achieve certain objectives. These are listed below:
· To
oaden the extensive understanding of the neurological psychophysiology of mental health disorders
· To identify the major challenges that still existed in diagnosis, definition and further knowledge about mental health diseases across the globe.
· To improve the classification of mental health disorder that is cu
ently followed both internationally and in the United States.
· To advance the diagnostic ability of physicians in identifying and treating mental health disorders.
· To shift focus from the classification based on signs and symptoms of the disorder to the underlying causal mechanisms of the pathology.
· To widen further the scope of categorizing and analyzing mental health disorders based on a complete diagnostic criterion.
IV. An overview of the research methods used, including the techniques for sampling, data collection and data analysis
For meeting the research objectives, the three manuals, “International Classification of Diseases”, “National Institute of Mental Health’s Research Domain Criteria” and...
