Overview from the assessment section of the unit guide
Write a review of an academic journal article. Your chosen article should provide information
on new guidelines for evidence-based practice, review or change existing treatment practice
or refine or extend existing knowledge in the area of mental health, alcohol and other drugs.
Your review should clearly introduce and evaluate the strength of the evidence presented,
discuss how this information could be applied and calculate possible gains. Include
evidence from the literature to support your discussion.
Please post your essay onto Moodle before session 7 on Wednesday 11th September 2019

Session 7 of this unit. Do not scan and include a cover sheet to your electronically

Article review guidance
Define the task at hand
An article review is written for a knowledgeable readership. The review should summarize
the article and its key assertions and findings. A review generally assesses the strength of
the evidence and its application to practice. Remember that you may need to read the article
several times before you are clear on these particular aspects of the article. Note all terms,
phrases and theories you need to define, clarify or research before writing the review. Use
the formal style of writing and avoid expressing opinions from the first-person perspective.

Construct a review plan
Construct a plan to guide your writing including:
• A summary of the article including the strongest claims and findings
• The most positive aspects of the article
• A critique of the article including an evaluation of the findings and the strength of
evidence.
Questions that may guide your review
• What was the goal of the article?
• What theories did the author rely on?
• Was the article well defined?
• Was there relevant supportive evidence?
• Did the article contribute to practice?
• Did the article present the evidence accurately and clearly?
Components of the review
Introduction
• Include a full citation of the article. Reference your article using the APA system of
eferencing.
• Introduce the article including the theme of the article, the author’s thesis and main
claims. You may need to evaluate if these aspects of the article are clear or implied.
• The subject of the article and its relevance to practice should be outlined.
The introduction should
iefly sum up the strongest points and greatest drawbacks
associated with the article.
Overview of the article
• Provide an overview in your own words including the article’s main claims, main
points and results.
• Review the evidential support.
• Identify any gaps in evidence.
• Include the conclusions drawn by the author.
Be careful not to repeat points from your introduction. Include direct quotes from the original
article.

The main body of the review
• Evaluate the clarity and level of insight within the article.
• Include a critical discussion of 2-3 key issues or the main points highlighted within
the article.
• Assess the strength of evidence included within the article with reference to evidence
from other sources.
• Identify any indications of apparent bias.
• Calculate the importance of the article and the author’s contribution to the field.
• Conclude the main body of the review with an outline of the advantages of reading
the article.
Your summary of the article should be logically linked to the main body of the review.
Judgements on the vigor and worth of the article should be supported by references from
the literature. A review analyses and interprets as well as describes information.
The conclusion
• The conclusion is normally one paragraph long and reviews your writing by restating
the main points of the article and your associated judgements.
• You would review the standard of writing and the evaluated worth of the article.
• You may suggest the direction of further research.
Include a reference section. There is a 1500 word expectation for the article review.
