Background

The background for this project is as follows:

You are hired at a Catholic healthcare facility which was originally founded by the Felician Sisters. The administration at your workplace is appreciative of your efforts to complete your nursing degree and has received word that you have taken Felician University’s RELS 310. They know that you bring with you a holistic understanding of healthcare which includes integration of moral and spiritual considerations.

Scenario

You have been appointed the head of a committee that will author a new patient handbook for the facility.

Assignment: Patient Handbook for the Facility

For your Final Integration Project, you will write an introduction to the handbook, and one article regarding the institution’s stance on a morally challenging medical issue based on the Catholic-Christian understandings discussed in our course.

You will submit one Microsoft Word document of about five to six pages. The reference page of the project does not count towards the total number of pages.

Part 1) Handbook Introduction: Catholic Social Teaching (CST) and Holistic Care

In the introduction, discuss Catholic Social Teaching (CST) with emphasis on its central theme: The Dignity of the Human Person. Explain how your healthcare institution strives to provide holistic care to everyone it serves. Include a discussion of how these concepts have been integrated into healthcare practice from the founding of the institution to the present day. The introduction should be about two pages and include two direct references from course materials. This is not a research assignment, where you need to locate and rely upon material outside of the course. Integrate understandings from our course and refer directly to course materials to explain how and why healthcare at your institution holds CST and holistic care as priorities.

Part 2) Article regarding the ethical dimensions of one medical dilemma from the Catholic Christian perspective

For your handbook article, choose a morally challenging medical issue discussed in our course which presents a dilemma for those deciding on possible medical treatment options. Define the medical issue and explain the basics of Catholic-Christian teaching regarding the medical treatment options in an article of about three pages. Provide a clear and concise guide to inform patients and/or their families regarding the Catholic-Christian ethical understandings of the dilemma and what types of procedures would or would not be permissible at your institution. Provide two or three references from the coursework including the texts and/or official documents that explain Church teaching. Again, this is not a research paper. Utilize resources from the course.

Running Head: NURSING
NURSING 2
Nursing
Introduction
I have been hired at the Catholic healthcare facility as the head of the committee that was founded by Felician Sisters originally. However, the administration at my workplace is quite efforts in terms of the efforts that are put in the nursing degree and this post is given to me as I have holistic understanding in terms of the healthcare.
Part 1) Handbook Introduction: Catholic Social Teaching (CST) and Holistic Care
Catholic Social Teaching tends to cover all spheres of life that consists of the following such as the personal, economic, political along with the spiritual. In general Catholic Social Teaching is mainly based on the entire belief that God has plan for the creation, a plan for building his kingdom of love, peace as well as justice. Furthermore, Catholic Social Teaching tend touché upon various aspects of the life from the family to the international development such as how everyone shops and consumes to the dignity of work as well as the rights of workers (Freedman, Landy & Steinauer, 2008).
In general there are 7 themes of the Catholic Social Teaching are as follows:
· Life and dignity of the human person
· Call to community, family as well as participation
· Rights and responsibilities
· Option for the vulnerable and the poo
· Rights of the workers and the dignity of work
· Solidarity
· Care for the God’s creation
Throwing light on the above-mentioned discussion it can be said that the Catholic tradition teaches that the human dignity can be protected along with that a healthy community can be achieved only if the rights of the human rights are protected as well as responsibilities can be met. Hence, every individual has a primary right and right of those things required for the decency of the human beings. It is proclaimed by the Catholic Social Teaching that the life of the human beings are quite sacred as well as the dignity of the individuals are also the moral vision for the entire society (O'Rourke, Boyle & Boyle, 2011). It is also called by the Catholic teaching to work on us individually for avoiding any kind of war. However, it is needless to say that nations must protect the right toward the life by finding out the effective ways for preventing any kind of conflicts as well as resolving them peacefully. It is also believed that each of the human being is quite precious and people are much more vital than the things.
Holistic care also involves considering cultural and social differences along with the preferences. In my healthcare institution the Holism is considered to be the philosophical approach for supporting of the belief that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The holistic nurses in this particular institution tend to recognise and each of the patient differently. Furthermore, they also nurture wholeness and heal them by respecting each of the patient’s mental, physical, spiritual, emotional as well as environmental challenges and strengths honouring each of the patient’s values, experience of the health and benefits of the health (Sulmasy, 2006). In other words,...
