PRESENTATION TASK
In groups of two, you will debate a contemporary issue relating to the healthcare
industry against an opposing group. In preparation for the debate, you will
esearch the debate question from both perspectives: the affirmative and opposing
teams—each student will research one argument from the affirmative and opposing
perspective. Arguments must be underpinned by sound evidence. On the day, your
debate perspective will be chosen by the tutor.
During the debate, you will be required to use the Policy debate structure that has
een introduced during the module. Each student will present their arguments
within a time frame and be prepared for cross-examination from the opposing
team. Each student must contribute 5 minutes overall, and the tutor will chair the
debate.

Debate Topics
Groups will choose one of the following questions to debate:

1. Should smokers be responsible for their healthcare costs as a result of
smoking?
2. Legalising assisted suicide: Is it a good idea?
3. If dementia service users abuse staff, should they be exempted from
prosecution?

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
You will be assessed on your capacity to develop a well-supported argument for or
against the selected debate topic. In addition to presenting at least one well-
esourced argument during the main argument, you will also be expected to
participate in the cross-examination or rebuttal.
Your debate will be assessed against the learning outcomes. You can find more
information about the marks in table 1.

A Code of Conduct (CoC) violation can result in you losing marks for the assessed
debate.
The CoC states that students must:
ï‚· Behave in a respectful and courteous manner towards the chair and other
participants
ï‚· Avoid inte
upting other participants; speak only when allocated to by number
the chair
ï‚· Not engage in ve
ally / physically offensive behaviour (e.g. swearing,
shouting, prejudiced / personal comments)
ï‚· Avoid reading from a pre-prepared statement; the lecturer may ask you to
stop, reduce your marks, or terminate your attempt altogether
ï‚· Abide by any other rules present within ARU, London disciplinary regulations
not listed above
While you may
ing notes along to assist you, you must not read a prepared
argument in place of presenting your own live. This assessment is designed to test
your ability to participate in structured debates and present a sound researched
argument, not whether you can read out loud.
References must be submitted to your lecturer prior to the debate assessment.

MOD004061: CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN HEALTHCARE
LEVEL 6 DEBATE: TOPIC 3: DEMENTIA SERVICE USERS ABUSE STAFF, SHOULD THEY BE EXEMPTED FROM PROSECUTION?
The Argument against why Dementia patients should be prosecuted for Staff Abuse
Dementia is one of concerning medical condition, which is associated with memory loss, panic attacks due to the mismanagement of various activities of daily life, as well as psychological pressure that individuals feel when they are put to the treatment process. In fact, dementia serves as the foundation to the deformity of mind. The abilities, with which the person has lived his or her entire life, remain at the verge of being lost permanently (Rosen et al. 2019).
It is implied that at diagnostic level, clinicians keep in mind various aspects of human nature such as frustration, anger or even violence as a part of the dementia symptoms. Thus, considering staff abuse as the ‘legally accountable’ act of violence on behalf of dementia patients should not be permitted; nor there should be any prosecution ca
ied out against them because it is natural to respond to the infirmities of mind and body.
At first, it is noteworthy that it is human nature to revolt against the changes in body, as the life progresses. In elderly people, some natural emotions such as random episodes of anger and frustration along with stu
ornness can be seen as their natural behaviour as they are not mentally prepared to accept that age has weakened them from within (Rosen et al. 2019).
The same concept is applicable over the patients of dementia because these patients are also not mentally ready to understand that there are certain...
