There are four Services classes are defined in Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) to transfer
it stream.
ï‚· CBR (Constant Bit Rate)
ï‚· VBR (Variable Bit Rate)
o VBR-NRT (Non-Real Time)
o VBT-RT (Real Time)
ï‚· UBR (Unspecified Bit Rate)
All of these methods are used according to the priority pattern as defined below:
CBR (Constant Bit Rate), where constant bit stream required in transmission and no delay is
concerned whereas VBR (Variable Bit Rate) having different packets in size and in their timing.
A transmission with variable bits in different frames. For example, a document that has to be
transfer over a network can have different methods of compression and in different size. A time
difference may not be concern in this type of transmission. ABR (Available Bit Rate) is almost
same as VBR, however minimum frame is defined fixed and entire frame used if no CBR and
VBR transmission left. UBR (Unspecified Bit Rate) is on the other hand, is unspecified bit rate
where jobs are not specified and prioritized. Adaption layer: AAL5
AAL 5: For data and support, connection oriented and connectionless data are used by primary
AAL to transfer non SMDS data. Example for SMDS data such as LANE (Local Area Network
Emulation) and Classical Internet Protocol (IP). Simple and Efficient Adaption layer is another
name of AAL5.
According to the priority pattern these service class use. According to the scenario where bit
ate and minimum quality of service are the top priorities UBR (Unspecified Bit Rate) would be
