VET CASE STUDY:
Rachel is a 15-year-old girl who has been referred to you by a local GP for support with processing a recent sexual assault and persistent bullying from peers at school. Rachel lives in a regional and remote community and the perpetrator of this assault is currently incarcerated but his family is still living in town. His children attend Rachel’s school and most of the school are aware of the offence. Rachel’s GP has diagnosed her with anxiety, depression and suicidal thinking, but has suggested she work with you to process this event first. Rachel lives with her mum and 12- year-old sister. Her relationship with her mother is suffering as it was her that introduced the perpetrator to the family through their association at work. Her relationship with her sister and the school counsellor is positive and despite these challenges her passion for singing and song writing has continued. She describes the presence of music in her life as ‘the only thing that keeps her going and provides relief from thoughts of dying’. Rachel has commenced cutting herself and drinking alcohol 1-2 times a week to a point that she forgets things. Rachel attends school 1-2 days a week, but often ends up running away from school due to bullying from her peers. Her peers have taken to harassing her daily and suggested she encouraged the assault through her flirtatious behavior. Various posts on social media have occurred that are derogatory to Rachel. Rachel is open to engaging with you and you have managed to build positive rapport in a short space of time.
