Write a roughly 1500 word essay (5-6 pages, Times New Roman or Calibri 12pt font) on one of the following two topics. Please choose to write on only one topic. You may use secondary sources to support your argument, but you are not required to do so. The majority of your analysis should develop an independent close reading through analysis of quotations drawn from the text(s).
Topics for Major Essay:

How do the borders and boundaries in Salman Rushdie's novel Luka and the Fire of Life enrich the novel's literary style of magical realism? Create an argument that shows specifically how Rushdie uses borders and boundaries in a magically real manner to shape our experience of the text. Hint: remember that boundaries can be physical, psychological, and magical.

For whichever essay topic you choose, follow these general guidelines:

Be sure to build a thesis that offers a strong specific argument.
Ensure that you use quotations from the texts to support your points and fully discuss those quotations in your analysis.
