Issues of Sex and Gender in Society Today

Identify an issue that is facing our society today that is in some way related to sex and/or gender and has opposing sides. Consider a law that was recently put into or taken out of effect or is being debated. You could also look to the statements or actions of a public figure or organization that has generated significant attention from the media. The issue you select should have ample material from which you may pull to gain insight into the details surrounding it. Feel free to email your instructor if you would like to verify that an issue is appropriate or if you would like some suggestions as to what you could cover.

Explore multiple sides of the issue you have selected until you have a good understanding as to why each side believes it is right. Research the historical events that have caused the circumstances of this issue. Engage in discussions with others who have strong feelings about the issue to learn the reasons why they feel they way they do.

Make sure you research both sides thoroughly as your goal with this paper will be to write it in a manner that does not allow the reader to know which side of the issue that you are on. You will not be condoning or condemning either side- your goal is to be as objective as possible in reviewing the issue you select.

Construct a 1,000-1,250 word essay that demonstrates your understanding of the following:

  • The issue that you have identified (a concise synopsis of what the issue is)
  • Historical context (previous events in history that have contributed to the rise of the issue)
  • Both sides of the current argument (provide an objective review- the reader shouldnotknow which side of the issue that you personally are on)
  • At least two possible resolutions to the issue (include the potential ramifications of each resolution for both sides)

Your paper should include an introduction and conclusion, at least 5 cited references (only 2 of which may be your discussions with others, excluding those identified as subject matter experts in your writing), and must adhere to APA formatting.

The debate on US anti-trafficking law
Introduction
Human trafficking has been equated to slavery, in fact, it is held as the modern form of slavery. It involves intentional smuggling of people against their will for forced labour and often sexual exploitation. It is a form of transport of individuals through oppression, coercion or deception for the benefit of third parties. Based on statistics from the US Justice Department, an estimated 17,500 people are trafficked to the US every year, though other bodies estimate the numbers to be as high as 300,000 cases per year (O'Rourke, 2019).
The major trafficking occurs in the form of sex trafficking where individuals, often minors, are trafficked for sex. This has been an issue of mounting concern with human rights organizations and the government has taken several initiatives and passed laws in order to cu
sex-trafficking. These moves have been made in order to rescue victims who cannot free themselves or raise their voice. It is also aimed at helping reduce human trafficking as a whole. While sex trafficking remains a major issue that the country struggles to deal with, there is conflict whether tackling this issue will affect sex workers as well. There is also concern that such laws on sex trafficking might actually push the act further underground and make it difficult to trace.
Historical context
The US has witnessed human trafficking for a long time especially along international travel-hubs that have large immigrant populations, like Texas, California and Georgia. A 2016 Global Slavery Index estimated that around 57,700 people across the world are victims of human trafficking including children, women, teenagers and even men.
The federal law 18 USC § 1589 makes it is a crime to make people work against their will by use of force, coercion or fear. So, human trafficking is a federal crime under Title 18 of the United States Code. It was further made illegal through the 13th Amendment. The various federal agencies of the country are responsible for the enforcement of human trafficking laws.
The Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act of 2000 increased the sentences allotted to traffickers. It also provided more resources for protecting and assisting victims of trafficking. The Act also provided facilities for victims to stay in the US and apply for residency while they were treated as criminals earlier. All minors engaged in...
