Group tutorials

One three hour session will be dedicated to assessment guidance. Advice for Students

The objective of this assignment is to show a clear understanding of the different kinds of services in health and social care and how they all fit together. The poster will consist of graphics and text to show when, where, why and how people may need to use an identified health care or social care service.

You can be imaginative in your graphics and ensure clarity of thought and process. The poster should be clear enough to be understood by any individual who may need to access the identified health or social care service. References should be on the foot of the poster or submitted on a separate sheet.

The 1,000 word report will demonstrate an in depth knowledge of a service in health or social care. This can be in the voluntary or charity sector, or be a statutory service. You need to be specific e.g. not just NHS or Adult social care but for example maternity services for young people or services for people under 65 with dementia etc.

The assessment criteria sets out the questions that you need to cover in the report. If possible, carry out a visit to the project or organisation that you have chosen and talk to both staff and service users. Permission from the organisation will need to be sought. Please don’t quote the people you have spoken to in your essay.

You will need to submit each component via Moodle as two separate pieces of work. The poster will need to be saved as a PDF file.

The poster and report can relate to the same or different organisations.

Guidance for designing a poster

Academic posters are commonly used in academic environments to present research and promote discussion. A poster is a way to introduce your ideas and thinking. The audience is a patient/service user who is about to embark on a journey through health and/or social care services and wants to know about the different services and professionals that they may come across.

An effective poster: -

• Makes an impact – gets the message across

• Has a focus

• Let’s graphs and images tell the story (uses text sparingly)

• Keeps the sequence well-ordered and obvious

• Uses unambiguous language

• Is not too ‘busy’

• Factually correct

Process of designing a poster

• Think about who your audience is; what would you want to know about the service if you were a service user?

• Formulate your idea

• Write down the contents that you want to convey

• Reduce the text to clear concise statements/phrases

• Format the type

• Choose and prepare the images

• Design the layout

• Choose a colour scheme

• Check contents carefully for any errors – may be show to someone else.

Remember…..

• To reference your work

• Ensure fonts are a readable size

• Submit on time in the correct format

Guidance for writing a report

This is an academic piece of writing and will need to be referenced using LSBU Harvard. Ensure that you use academic language relating to health and social care. The report needs to be descriptive and where appropriate analytical. Reading your work out loud to yourself at the end will help you identify any grammatical errors. The questions in the assessment should act as guidance on how to structure the report and below is a suggested guide to word counts in each section but this is not definitive.

Introduction (approx. 200 words)

· What is the organisation (brief facts can be included) and why have you chosen it?

· Describe what the report is going to be about

Main Body (approx. 650)

· Go through each question in the assessment criteria ensuring that you have answered the questions.

Conclusion (approx. 150 )

· Summarise your findings in terms of the organisation

· Reflect on whether you think the organisation is effective in meeting its aims and objectives.

· What does it do well and what areas might need improvement?

· Are there any gaps in the services they provide?

· If you had the budget what would you do differently?
