The stereotypes about nurses in the media are at odds with reality.
The general public still lacks an understanding of nursing as a distinct, theory-based, and academic profession (Godsey et al,2020).
Nurses felt they had to alter their look due to the public's perception of their occupation.
Scrubs and an RN identifying patch replaced the traditional nursing hat as the answer to nursing's identity dilemma.
The formation of nurses' sense of self and professional identity is most influenced by the public's perception of the nursing profession. Nurses' sense of self and professional identity is heavily influenced by the belief that they are second in command to doctors.
This discourages people from speaking out for their profession because they feel helpless.
Researchers found that nurses' poor self-perception was a direct result of the public's bad perception of the profession. However, the public's perception of nurses is affected by their own low self-concept and the way they show themselves (Amaniyan,Nobahar and Raiesdana,2021).
Impact on nursing practice
On a nurse's identity and sense of professionalism, the perception of nursing is a significant factor.
The media may have a significant role in shaping public opinion about the nursing profession (Amaniyan, Nobahar and Raiesdana, 2021).
Consequently, the purpose of this research was to investigate how the media portrays nurses in different cultures.
The media's perpetuation of harmful generalisations about nurses hurts the profession's standing in the public eye.
