Assignment 1
Please share a work experience or personal experience related to living with or caring for an elderly person.
I have been living with my grandmother for the past 10 years. In my first year, when I just started living with her, she was 60 years old and she was doing fine. She was able to complete her daily activities on her own and all her vital organs are functioning very properly. Although she suffered from arthritis, still her body functioning was fine.
With the passage of years, with age, her body started showing changes, which clearly indicates she is facing problems of aging. Loss of weight and getting tired in doing petty activities were the first signs, which I have noticed in her. As the time proceeded, she started forgetting things and names, and found it difficulty in tracing her everyday belongings.
What were some indicators of change in this individual?
There are many indicators of aging. The most prominent aspect of aging is physical, psychological and biological. Biological and psychological aspects of aging are the internal and behavioral changes respectively, which are detected by observing changes in the elderly person as well as by conducting proper tests.
With further time, I also saw her forgetting memories of her close ones. Besides, after some time, I also found her forgetting doing daily activities such as she sometimes bathed twice within a span of two hours as she forgot that she had already taken a bath that day.
Given these changes, would you promote home care or facility care? Please share your reasoning.
Last year, she started na
ating imaginary stories of past or present events. This alarmed us that she is not good on her own. She would need regular care for twenty-four hours. Cu
ently, she is unable to hear things easily. As suggested by Bird, Pittaway, Cuisick, Rattray and Ahuja (2013), loss of memory, auditory abilities, and tiredness in daily activities indicate age-related change. She is not difficult to be handled and lesser able to do daily activities; nevertheless, she needs supervision as well as care. Thus, given the fact that she was still independent, she could be promoted to home care rather than facility care.
Assignment 2
What did this information highlight, and how does this information relate to the biological and psychological aspects of aging?
There are many research articles that have worked on biological and psychological aspect of aging. The result of these researches can be applied in most of the cases. The article by Agogo, Milne and Schewe (2014) is one such paper that supports the biological and psychological aspect of aging.
As suggested by Agogo, Milne and Schewe (2014), aging can be analyzed or detected based on its biological and psychological aspects. This article highlights the biological changes that occur in body lead to the aging and deterioration of health. It na
ates the various theories of biological aging giving by other scientists. One such theory is of programmed aging. According to this, there is a biological clock in every body, which limits the lifespan of the person.
It also highlights the non-programmed theory that states that the inability of body to conduct proper mechanisms such as oxidation and removal of toxic by-product leads to aging. The deterioration of vital organs is the main sign of aging. For example, inability of kidneys to remove toxic waste from the body is the sign...
