Introduction
Geriatric care management is the care of elderly adults with age-related health issues. There are several challenges faced by managers, which show lack of practices in this field.
Challenging Issues related to Geriatric Care Management
Physical and Mental Health
According to Ramaswamy et al. (2015), the many elders are capable of maintaining good health. Aging is a biological process, which leads to physical and mental health problems. As the ages of elders increase, the bones and muscles begin to weaken and sometimes become nonfunctional. In some cases, loss of hearing or eyesight take place. In high-risk cases, the mobility of a patient becomes very limited.
Health Care Costs
As stated by Suijker et al. (2017), healthcare service cost is very expensive in the healthcare system. The Medicare service does not cover the cost of long period care, or home care or mental and emotional health service. Many nursing homes struggle with under-staffing issues, which can lead to negligence or abuse of the residents.
Social Isolation, Bereavement and Loneliness
As mentioned by Kim, Nakaoka and Underwood (2017), elderly adults are less connected with social activities and enjoyments than younger aged people are. Retirement, migration of children, spouses and friends passing away are some reasons behind the loneliness as well as the isolation of elderly people, which make geriatric case management even more difficult.
Benefits and Drawbacks of Remedies to the Challenges
