Background
There might be multiple factors which can contribute to a delay in seeking medical advice regarding stroke out of which, lack of knowledge on the signs and symptoms of stroke is a key reason (Alberts, 1998). Unfortunately, understanding of risk factors and warning indications could be found poor in the common population in a consistent manner for example; a research study (conducted in 2005) reflected that only 38.0% of adults were conscious about all five stroke signs and symptoms.
To make the issue worse, people who have a risk factor for stroke could not reflect a better understanding related to stroke warning indications than those who were without risk factors (Williams, 1979).Lack of knowledge among people who are already standing at the danger line might pose a threat to their lives (Dolecek et al., 1986).
In such people, we may take example of elderly adults who might suffer from chronic illness because of shortage of understanding and information on signs and symptoms of stroke and may need to be hospitalized usually owing to that (Yoon et al, 2001). In fact, stroke can affect the elderly persons (who are above 40 years) with risk factors for example; diabetes, hypertension, and stress in a frequent manner.
According to the research studies based on stroke, there may be scrutinized positive outcome(s) if stroke could be detected and treated near the beginning. Hence; there is requirement to evaluate the stroke based programs so that, an effective strategy might be prepared which could offer a helping hand in enhancement of awareness regarding stroke (Donna et al, 1996).
Problem statement
Here problem is “requirement of increment in knowledge regarding stroke” that could be solved with the assistance of a qualitative ethnographic study based on two groups of people; who had stroke and their caregivers and two groups of community members which can give an idea about the knowledge and insight of stroke in the community and families who have a patient with stroke.
The conclusion drawn from such study can prove to be helpful in development of educational strategies for the community with the intention that, knowledge on the disease procedure can be enhanced via better education facilities and thus long-term complications which may result from stroke could be prevented.
Purpose statement
Stroke is considered as the third leading cause of death as well as adult disability in the United States. On the other hand, this is also a fact that out of all neurological ailments, stroke is the most avoidable. Improved control of stroke risk factors may offer great opportunity for effective stroke avoidance.
For instance; numerous recognized risk factors for stroke as; high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease and smoking could be prohibited with the assistance of medicines or via adoption of healthier choices regarding life style (Mu
ay & Lopez, 1996).
Further, benefits of decreasing the time from stroke onset to hospital a
ival and early treatment of stroke are obvious. It’s important to take the help of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in stroke case so that, on time support could be achieved and pre hospital notification is also compulsory in such situation for quick interference so that, chance of
ain damage could be reduced. On the other hand, Increased time gap between symptom commencement and treatment for stroke can enhance the mo
idity and death via decreasing the wellness/survival chances for the patient (Dolecek et al., 1986).
Still, it’s unfortunate that delay in stroke treatment persists owing to unawareness of people regarding identification of warning signs for stroke hence; its obligatory to address the great gaps in knowledge concerning stroke and speedy evaluation of it so that, therapeutic outcomes could be maximized.
The purpose of this qualitative ethnographic study is to gain an insight into the public knowledge concentrating on risk factors, signs, symptoms, treatment, prevention, rehabilitation, and perceptions of stroke and to provide them information related to above areas if needed since; effective community...
