MENTAL HEALTH & ILLNESS
PERSPECTIVES ON HOW MENTAL ILLNESS IS CAUSED AND TREATED
Executive Summary
Schizophrenia is a cognitive health disorder that occurs due to a number of issues, which cannot be accounted for specifically. However, it has been identified that schizophrenia is not the result of solely mental turmoil, as there is also a prominent psychological side to it. With the help of the present report, it has been attempted to illustrate that the causes of schizophrenia can be indicated using various psychological perspectives as well. Therefore, its aetiology has been aligned to various psychological theories, such as cognitive, behavioural, humanistic and psychodynamic, apart from identifying the medical cause. Besides, the report also informs about its treatment in a similar manner, thus, indicating that the treatment or management procedures could also be based on such psychological perspectives.

Introduction
Schizophrenia is a mental health issue that can occur to any adolescent individual or young adults. In this disorder, the person experiences or perceives things that are not for real and they begin losing their cognitive skills as well as abilities. Therefore, they experience hallucinations, delusions and illusions, which distu
them mentally largely. Not only that, schizophrenia is a major concern for the patient, their family members and the care providers, because it is a long-term issue that might lead the patient to struggle with their daily lives or activities throughout their lifetime. However, by analysing the concept and aetiology of this disease, it has been found that only medical or mental reasons are responsible for its causation, nevertheless, it also has a psychological attribute it. From this perspective, the cu
ent report has been constructed, so that the causes and treatment of schizophrenia could be evaluated from various psychological perspectives.
2.1 Causes of Schizophrenia from Various Psychological Perspectives
The key cause of schizophrenia has not been identified yet in the history of mental health. Nevertheless, there is a range of reasons to it that can cause this disorder in late adolescent or early adult people. As mentioned by Buss and Buss (2017), while medical issues such as heredity, birth complications and proactive immune system can cause schizophrenia, psychologists also try to evaluate the situation from psychological constructs of patients. Therefore, following theories have attempted to underpin the causes, so that even if not direct, indirect reasons leading to this disease could be identified for treatment as well as management.
Grounding on Medical Model
The Medical Model of Psychology identifies causes of all mental illnesses to be originating from physical issues. Therefore, viewed from this perspective of psychology, it can be said that a number of symptoms, when they combine to be a syndrome, can lead to the causation of a certain mental illness. Similarly, as stated by Osby et al. (2016), the cause of schizophrenia can also be evaluated from this perspective that although it is a mental health issue, its cause can be one or more physical attributes. Hence, the possible cause of schizophrenia is identified to be genetic disorder, inherited from family history of schizophrenia.
Grounding on Psychodynamic Theory
The psychodynamic theory of Freud has emphasised on the fact that human beings are greatly impacted by the conscious and unconscious inter-play of situations in their life that largely modify their behaviour. Therefore, from this perspective, Meehl (2017) mentioned that schizophrenia could be caused substantially due to the occu
ence of stress, conflicts, turmoil and so
ows in one’s life, if these have not been solved yet. In other words, it can be stressed on the fact that the distu
ed past of an individual can have a prolonged effect on their life, which is why they might hallucinate or perceive things that they either want to or avoid to.
Grounding on Behaviourist Theory
The behaviourist theory of psychology points out to the fact that the behaviour or the habit of a person plays a large role in determining the kind of mental...
