Computerized provider order entry systems are used to replace a hospitals paper-based ordering system by maintaining online records of every order. Errors Preventable by using EHR and CPOE Errors that can be prevented by EHR are: · It keeps the record of the patients and their allergies, preventing prescribing medicines causing side effects to patients having allergies. · It is helpful in analyzing the past and current prescription of patients allowing controlling medication errors. · It consists of complete medical record and histories, thus preventing medication errors occur due to communication gap. As suggested by Braaf, Rixon, Williams, Liew and Manias (2015), communication gap while transferring patients are mostly responsible for the medication errors. · EHR helped in determining the standard approved dosage of medication. This is helpful in prevention of over dosage, which is biggest reason for medication error. · It is helpful in improving the quality care given to the patients resulting in prevention of adverse cases of medical errors (Burlison et al., 2018).
