Assignment 1 – Detailed design of a modern network for a multi building campus
Unit Learning
Outcomes
covered in
This
assessment
The purpose of this assignment is to design and develop NETWORK requirements, which
can be implemented with LAN/WLAN/WAN services for a University Campus (any campus
having multiple buildings). The design of network and service must be specific so that it can
e used for a purpose of a quotation and proposal from vendors and internet service
providers.
After the assignment, students are expected to learn not only the knowledge and cu
ent
technical aspects of advanced networking but also research, data collection, analysis and
writing skills, which are very important and helpful.

The following ULOs:
a. Model and critically compare LAN and WAN network technologies, topologies and
implementation;
. Configure, test and troubleshoot various network devices including routers and
switches
c. Evaluate, different WAN protocols; such as HDLC, PPP, Frame Relay, DHCP, ISDN,
NAT and PAT in a network environment, and configure, verify, troubleshoot related
equipment;

1. Introduction
The multiple locations of the campus requires connectivity with each other through the developed LAN but when the campus is having multiple physical locations, then, requirement of WAN a
ives. For developing the network of any campus, different devices like hubs, wireless points, switches and different servers are required. In addition to these devices, the campus administration will also require fax, voice messaging and connection to internet. The required connections for a campus having five or more buildings, costing is not considered as important aspect, so, repudiated devices will be utilized in such networks. The multiple buildings of the campus will require network infrastructure for maintaining the communication in between students and faculty members of the campus. It is also possible that the different buildings of the campus will have different requirements of server implementation and speed.
2. Network diagram for multiple buildings in campus
The possible development of network design for campus is based on the methodology selection by the designers. As the case shows that the multiple buildings are sharing the same network so, hierarchical networking method is selected for the network design in which one building will act as the main
anch and other will act as the connections [Fodor et al, 2012]. The implementation of this hierarchical design is based on three layers in which the routing services to all buildings will be provided by core layer, control boundaries for students and faculty members will be decided by the access layer and network service distribution is maintained by the distribution layer. So, for maintaining the interconnection among all buildings of the campus following network diagram is developed:
Diagram 1: Building diagram
3. Limitations and possible scope of developed network design
The provided case of campus implements the network in multiple buildings and each building will implement its own LAN to provide the services to their students and other staff members. The WAN implementation defines the scope for this proposed network design for students and staff members for accessing the network services. The development of network design for the campus having multiple buildings is the main scope of my presented report. To define the scope of my network design for campus, the implementation of technologies, required topologies, access to internet and other security services with latest technology are included in my report.
As my report is complete and significant but detailed development of network architecture for the campus is main limitation and this is the future scope of my further developments. The limitation to network design is that physical network is required by the campus and campus is using its own servers for holding the services but this all work can be done by cloud on easy bases. But cloud services are not requested by the campus, so, the implementation absence of cloud services is main limitation to my proposed network design.
4. Requirement analysis with logical and physical design solution
The development of network to this campus makes requirement analysis as the essential requirement for me. As campus is looking for both wired and wireless options to develop their network; so, separate requirement analysis is required for LAN...
