* Discuss which dietary and gastrointestinal considerations would the nurse need to address in providing education to the individual with the selected condition?
* Critically analyse the manner in which gastrointestinal anatomy and physiology is affected by the selected condition.
* Outline the most significant diagnostics and pharmacological treatments for the selected condition, and discuss the nurses role within providing these.
Your response should be patient centred and approach the topic from a holistic appreciation of healthcare.

Critical Analysis
Topic: Obesity
Student Name:
Student ID:
Introduction
According to National Health Survey of Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2017, around 2/3 of the adults in Australian overall population are obese (Department of Health, 2019). The number of obese people has increased from 63.4% in 2014 to 67% in 2017-18 (Department of Health, 2019). The disease is a major risk factor for the diseases like diabetes 2 mellitus, gastrointestinal diseases, cardiovascular problems, musculoskeletal conditions and certain cancers. Several digestive diseases are also related to obesity such as Ba
ett’s Esophagus (BE), Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), colon polyp and cancer (CPC), hepatitis C related issues, non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), gallstone, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), pancreatic cancer, esophageal cancer and cholangiocarcinoma (Nam,2017).
The essay critically analyzes the impact of Obesity on gastrointestinal diseases with following subheadings: 1. Factors su
ounding gastrointestinal health considered in nursing assessment for obesity; 2. Dietary and Gastrointestinal considerations the nurse would need to address while providing education to obese people; 3. The manner in which the gastrointestinal anatomy and physiology is influenced by obesity; 4. Diagnostic and pharmacological treatments for obesity and the role of nurse in providing these.
Factors su
ounding Gastrointestinal Health considered in Nursing Assessment for Obesity
Obesity may be defined as excess fat in body that leads to increased mortality and mo
idity. The risk factors for obesity related health issues are: a BMI of more than 30, waist circumference more than 102 cm in men and more than 88 cm in women, poor aerobic fitness, and an increase in more than 5 kgs weight between the age of 18-20 years.
Obesity is a complex and multifaceted health issues, several lifestyle factors are considered during the nursing assessments of the disease. For example, it is necessary to determine whether the patient takes his weight as an issue or he is agree to change. The primary assessment needs to consider that the genetic makeup of the patient affects his weight control.
The nursing professionals should complete a
ief family Genogram to identify the weight control issues in patient’s family members. A person having family history of obesity may consider dieting as less successful. However, he may agree a little to adopt minute changes in for improving his health. Other aspects like medical history of the patient and his family history of health may help identify the factors associated with obesity like cardiac diseases, hypertension, and cancer. The lifestyle habits like unhealthy diet, drugs and tobacco use, and low level of activity in the lifestyle need to be assessed.
Medication history of the patients is necessary to assess the obesity. For instance, several medications (like medicines of diabetes, antipsychotic medicines, antidepressants, steroid hormone medicines, epilepsy medicines and BP reducing medicines) add to weight gain and make the weight losing very difficult (Watson, Foley & Hurd, 2019). Patient education should be encouraged to take the required medicines though they increase weight. The patient should consider modifications in the lifestyle that may reduce the weight gain related to these medicines. The physicians may opt for the other alternatives of medications to reduce the gain in weight.
Weight gain relies on several factors like age, lifestyle habits, eating habits, exercise, or medical conditions. The assessment can identify whether the weight gain is due to some other factors like pregnancy or fluid retention, medicines or excessive eating habits.
Physical Assessment of BP, height, weight or BMI are primary factors while assessing the obese patients. The Nurses need to determine the fasting blood sugar, waist circumference, and patient’s lipid profile. These factors influence the risk of obesity. A waist circumference more than 102 cm in men and more than 88 cm in women leads to elevated visceral fat in abdomen and leads to development of hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes and fatty liver. The risk of Type 2 Diabetes is found to be higher in patients of Asian descent. The patient’s joints and muscles are assessed for mobility and function, identifying the earlier injuries and the future potential of getting an injury (Geraldine & Anthony, 2015).
Eating behavior assessments are also important to identify the factors responsible for obesity in patients.
Dietary and Gastrointestinal considerations the nurse would need to address while providing education to obese people
The Nurse may perform eating behavior assessments which depend on the co
ect recall of the diet (National Institute of Diabetes and digestive and Kidney Diseases [NIDDK], 2017). The patients are advised to make a 5-7 days note writing down the food and drinks consumed in last 7 days, the time and place where they were consumed and patient’s emotions while eating...
