The Externalities of Education
An externality is the impact of one person’s action on the well being of a bystander. If
the impact is beneficial to the bystander, it is called positive externality. In the presence of
externalities, society’s interest in a market outcome extends beyond the well being of buyers
and sellers in the market. Education provides various positive externalities because it creates
knowledge that the other people can use. Because the consumers and producers of education
cannot capture the full benefit of their action, they tend to devote too few resources to
education. The federal government addresses this problem through public funding. Large
scale investment in public education will lead to technological progress and technological
progress is the key to why living standards rise from generation to generation.
Universal education helps a country to reap the benefit which arises from the
technological advancement at the world level. It is necessary to have adequately educated
human capital stock to achieve a sustainable economic growth. Universal schooling system
helps the countries and societies to achieve its full human potential. The fundamental key to
the development process of any country is the accumulation of productive and efficient
human capitals which are made available by a well developed education system. Thus
education helps in achieving full potential of economic development of a nation and all
