Assignment 1
This assignment is based around three practice-based case studies. You are required to address each of the following issues for each of the three case studies in turn.
• Identify the ethical implications of each case study.• Identify and link relevant NMBA Codes or other documentation to the case study.• Critically discuss ethical principles relevant to the case study.• Identify any conflicts between different ethical principles and/or conflicts between ethical principles and legal requirements• Identify a course of action and provide a rationale for their decision by reference to the National Decision Making Framework.
Case studies
Case study one –Sam
Sam has kidney failure she lives in the country. Three times a week she makes the 3-hour trek to the City to have her dialysis to filter her kidneys.
Sam turned 76 last week.
She is tried.
You are on clinical placement for your second year Bachelor of Nursing course, and you are working with (RN) Sahar today.
Sahar and you have been asked to see Sam.
Sam has decided she no longer wants to continue with treatment.
Case study two –Sarah
On clinical placement today, you are working with (RN) Jo.
Jo asks you to help one of the other nurses Sarah. Sarah has to get one of her patients out of bed.
Sarah is agitated; she smells like she’s been drinking.
You hear Sarah tell one of the other patients she “enjoys a drink in the morning”.
Sarah asks the patient’s relative if he could put a bet on for her today and you see her hand the relative a $50 dollar note.
She asks the relative to leave so she can get the patient out of bed.
Sarah inappropriately handles the patient as she’s getting him out.you
Case study three- Jack
Congratulations you are now a Registered Nurse.
Today you are getting handover from Jack.
Jack has been looking after 16-year-old James. James is a newly diagnosed diabetic.
During handover Jack tells you he forgot to give James insulin at 9 am, but he signed for it
anyway because he planned on asking you to provide James with a double dose before tea
Jack said he told James’ Mum, he gave the insulin when she asked as she’s really anxious
and he didn’t want to cause her any stress.
