Impact of chronic illness and/or disability on the consumer’s life
Introduction:
Chronic diseases are typically described as ailments that persist for duration of at least one year and necessitate continuous medical care or restrict one's ability to ca
y out daily activities, or both. A chronic illness refers to a persistent health condition that might endure throughout an individual's life, such as asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, or fi
omyalgia. A disability refers to a physical or mental impairment that restricts an individual's capacity to move, perceive, or engage in various activities (Danny; 2008). Chronic illnesses, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes, are the primary factors contributing to mortality.
Chronic disease management entails the effective control of symptoms associated with a persistent illness, so enabling patients to experience a fulfilling life. By effectively managing a chronic disease, it is feasible to decelerate the advancement of the illness, regulate the symptoms, and regain control over one's life. The management tactics for chronic illness includes proper diet management, healthy food, exercise, lifestyle changes, prescription usage, and self-monitoring (Noreen; 2003).
In order to comprehend the effects of chronic sickness and/or impairment on the individual's life, a face to face interview was done with a patient who suffers from a chronic illness. This interview took place after providing him with a clear explanation of the purpose of conducting this survey and ensuring that he completed the appropriate patient consent form, which confirmed his voluntary participation in this inquiry.
The patient consent form is shown as below:

Interview transcript:
The interviewee provides a summary of his chronic disease. During the interview, the following strategies were recommended for managing his chronic illness:

Interviewee’s description about his chronic illness:
1. The interviewee characterized his overall health as "adequately controllable yet demanding." He discussed his experience of living with type 2 diabetes and hypertension, conditions that necessitate regular monitoring and careful control on a daily basis.
2. The interviewee has received a medical diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and hypertension, both of which are long-term health conditions. The interviewee attributes the development of type 2 diabetes to a combination of genetic predisposition and lifestyle factors, including an unhealthy diet and insufficient physical activity.
3. Hypertension was additionally ascribed to hereditary causes and stress. After examining the Wellness-Illness Continuum, the interviewee identified themselves as being in the "Illness" group on an average day. The reason for selecting this category is the necessity to effectively handle their persistent ailments on a daily basis, which significantly affects their general state of health.
4. The interviewee enumerated various obstacles and difficulties, such as financial limitations, restricted availability of nutritious food choices, and cultural perceptions regarding food and healthcare.
5. In order to preserve their physical well-being, the interviewee makes a conscious effort to engage in regular physical exercise, closely check their blood sugar levels, and diligently adhere to the prescribed pharmaceutical regimen.
6. To maintain good mental health, the interviewee employs stress management strategies, including deep
eathing exercises, meditation, and participating in enjoyable ho
ies.
Strategies suggested to the Interviewee for alleviating his stress due to chronic illness:
1. Advocate for the interviewee to engage in a daily mindfulness meditation practice of at least 10 minutes in order to diminish stress levels and enhance self-awareness.
2. Suggest incorporating consistent physical exercise, such as walking or practicing yoga, as a means of effectively coping with stress and enhancing general well-being.
3. Recommend participating in a support group specifically designed for those with chronic diseases. This will provide an opportunity to exchange personal experiences, acquire effective coping mechanisms, and foster a strong sense of belonging within a community.
4. To enhance kidney function and maintain optimal hydration, it is advisable to raise your daily water consumption to a minimum of 8 cups.
5. To enhance the nutritional value of your diet and promote better control of blood sugar levels, ensure that each meal includes...
