ASSESSMENT TASK 3 (in two parts) 1. Create a piece of work that relates themes from the Book of the Year, This is my Song (for example, racism, persecution, trauma, hope etc.) to the CST principles. This may include particular ideas, events, characters or a community in the book. Examples of a creative work might be • a diary entry; • a letter (to one of the central characters or to a community or to a government); • a short story; • a poem; • a piece of art; • a song (this is your song!) (up to 300 words or the equivalent of 1-2 pages long if it is a work of art) 2. Then write a personal reflection on the work that you have created, explaining the relationship between your created work, the Book of the Year and at least 2 or 3 principles of Catholic Social Thought (900 words). Students who do not have a copy of the novel may focus on one or more of these excerpts, which highlight key themes from the novel (available through the reading list): pp.30-33 pp. 34-37; pp. 38-39; pp.77-79; pp.99-101; pp118-121; pp XXXXXXXXXXReadings for this assessment: The book, “This is my Song” is fundamental reading for this assessment; so too are the readings of the unit available to you via LEO. You may include wider or further reading if you wish. Please note that you are not required to read outside of the novel and reading lists in the unit in order to achieve a high distinction in this assessment task. General Instructions: • The reflection should clearly explain to readers what the relationship is between your created work, the novel and at least 2 or 3 principles of Catholic Social Thought. • Please see the marking rubric at the end of the Unit Outline • The idea is to express your thoughts clearly and concisely and make your reflection as clear, accurate (in terms of your understanding of the principles) and coherent as you can. • The reflection does require correct and full referencing. • References and in-text citations do not count in the word limit. • See referencing guidelines on the UNCC100 LEO page (You can find it under Assessment>How do I reference course materials for UNCC units?). Part One: Story
John was in no mood to travel that day: he had gone through a lot already in the office and he wanted to relax for a while. Being a salesman for the past five years in the same firm, he had not earned that much of name and fame which is generally expected from the marketing sector. In spite of all his efforts so far, his growth was like zero. He would wake up at five in the morning and all day long, there would be nothing but hard work in the daylight, in the burning sun of May or in the chilly winds of December. He could be the only Christian who would think of getting back to work on the day of Christmas. But all this hard work was never paid back to him; going to the office meant that the boss will be right on his chin and would demand an explanation for the less sales in that part of the month. He used to wonder, “Where is the dignity of human beings who are employed at lower level? I do my part of hard work but it is never paid back to me. What is the use of such a living?” he moved on to his house steps with these thoughts intact but suddenly, his eyes caught a very serious activity in the street.
A small puppy was trying to help his mother to get out of the pit in the street; the puppy was making his best efforts and at the same time, in spite of knowing that he will not be able to pull her out, he was continuing with his efforts. John first immediately went out and helped the mother to get out of the pit and then, when he turned back to his home and headed to the house steps, he smiled and looked above, “I know you were there in the spirit of that puppy. I know that you are always there with me in one way or other like this. And this thought keeps me going on and on, so, Thank you for showing one more way to me My Lord!” He smiled and knocked at the door.
