Introduction
The healthcare sector runs on the professionalism of all the staffs and the employees. Among them, the registered nurse has a huge responsibility on them to lead the staff nurses with the accurate providence of the treatment plan to the patient for getting a positive outcome. The registered nurse also has a huge responsibility to maintain a workplace culture and discipline among the staff nurses to maintain the health and safety of the patients.
With proper leadership skills, the registered nurse can resolve several conflicts among the staff nurses and increase their performance. Accurate leadership of the registered nurse inculcates a motivation within the staff nursed and increases their productivity. I am obliged to get an opportunity to reflect on the leadership skills. Leadership skills are required to handle everyday situation as well as any situation in the clinical practice. Hence, the skills must be incorporated in the practice to be a successful leader.
Leadership Styles
There are mainly five leadership styles followed in nursing. We will mainly explore the transactional leadership style, transformational leadership style and democratic leadership style.
Transactional Leadership Style
The transactional style of leadership is based on the concept of reward or recognition, which encourages the nurses to perform their task accurately. As presented by Al‐Yami, Galdas and Watson (2018), the transactional leadership motivates the aged workers to continue their job role and serve the organisation. The recognition and promotion act as a motivating factor, which enhances the urge of working.
However, according to Specchia et al. (2021), the transactional leadership often creates a negative ambience in the workplace and fails to provide job satisfaction. The creativity misses in the process of working, as the only target is to achieve the reward anyhow. The reward and punishment system in nursing does not allow maintaining the proper standard of nursing as the task is performed out of greed. In healthcare sector, the nurses must be creative towards working and solving the patient’s problem for their health and safety.
Though this leadership style has several limitations, yet it can be appropriate in several situation of clinical practices. The short-term goals of nursing can be easily achieved with high efficiency. For example, when an elderly nurse works in the organisation for a longer time, she could be promoted or recognised with providence of incentives.
This will create a positive self-motivation towards working and maintaining the duty hours. As suggested by Poels, Verschueren, Milisen and Vlaeyen (2020), transactional leadership increases the productivity in the crisis period. This is addressed during the COVID pandemic, when the human resource was less in the healthcare units.
Transformational Leadership Style
The transformational leadership style is the most effective leadership quality in a healthcare organisation. This leadership includes effective communication and application of emotional intelligence within the system of leadership. As co
ectly stated by Iqbal, Fatima and Naveed (2019), the transformational leadership mediates several workplace conflicts as the leader nurse indulges themselves in the issue to solve it. Openness to feedbacks and taking recommendations from each staff provides a motivation regarding the work they perform and increases the productivity.
However, according to Asif, Jameel, Hussain, Hwang and Sahito (2019), though this kind of leadership helps in quality care of the patients, yet it often creates a pressure on the staffs if the leader follows a negative attitude. Often the lead nurse tries to impose the duties on the staff nurses without any consideration, which reduces the productivity of the employees. It is seen that without continuous communication, the nurses lose focus from...
