ASSESSMENT TASK 2: DESCRIPTION – Reflective paper

Clinical assessment is twofold, the patient interview and the physical examination. The patient interview is the primary means of extracting the patient’s perspective of their presenting problem and key to developing a person-centred plan of care. Establishing a therapeutic relationship and extracting a robust patient story utilises a plethora of communication skills such as empathy, active listening, nonverbal communication, building rapport, along with open and closed questioning.

In this assessment you will complete the following tasks:

• Conduct a patient interview and write a summary of your findings (200 words).

• Using a reflective model of your choice*, self-evaluate your interviewing style for its effectiveness in obtaining the patient’s story and presenting problem.

• Select one communication strategy you used during the interview and justify why it contributed towards establishing a therapeutic patient interview.

*Suggested reflective models might include Gibbs XXXXXXXXXXUnder your subject readings titled assessment 2, additional readings have been added to assist you with selection of your preferred reflective model.

You are expected to use contemporary literature to support your reflective discussion, which should not exceed 1500 words. The written component must be presented using correct academic writing presentation and APA (7th ed.) referencing style. As this is a reflection, first person may be used. Ensure you use a known reflection model to guide this reflection, and clearly identify this model in your paper. For guidance on standards for assessment preparation, including referencing, please see Assessment Preparation Guidelines.

Introduction
Self-reflection is one of the most effective tools, which healthcare professionals can be used to distinguish between ‘what was done’ and ‘what could have been done’. Reflective practice in healthcare allows the healthcare professionals to recognize their own strengths and weaknesses; thus, could be considered as a guide to on-going learning. This paper would discuss the summary and findings from the patient interviewed. Further, efforts would be made to present the self-evaluation of interviewing style by using reflective models. Likewise, analysis of the chosen communication strategy during the interview would be presented along with its significance concerning establishment of therapeutic patient interview.
Summary of Patient Interview and Findings
Following interview was conducted with Mr. Henderson, 36-year-old male, divorced and suffering from malignant lung cancer and questions asked were as followed.
· What actions according to you are responsible for your cu
ent health condition?
· Why did not you try to quit smoking?
· How this habit affected your life apart from the physical damage?
· What are your future goals?
Mr. Henderson presented that smoking was one of the major rationales behind his cu
ent health condition. Every individual around him including his family members, friends as well as his wife warned him; however, somehow Mr. Henderson claimed that he could not stop smoking. Further, it was found that Mr. Henderson father also died due to prostate cancer and his grandfather had a large tumour, which led to his death. Mr. Henderson lost almost everything due to his habit of smoking as he claimed that his wife left because Mr. Henderson did not stop smoking.
Most of his earnings are now spent on his treatment and almost all of his savings have been spent on chemotherapy and other supporting treatments. Mr. Henderson feels helpless and accepts that it was his fate to die due to cancer. He had already signed a DNR order because according to him, he cannot stop smoking as long as he is alive. Therefore, death is the only possible solution, which could release him from this habit because ‘there is no going back’.
Evaluation of Interviewing Style
Interviewing a patient is never an easy task and this is majorly because every patient visits with a different need. Therefore, it becomes difficult for us to fulfil their requirements; however, Mr. Henderson was a very cooperative patient. In order to present the evaluation of my interviewing style, I would use ‘John Driscoll Model of Reflection’ as a framework to guide the reflection process (Driscoll et al., 2019). There are three stem questions, which form the basis of this model, which are:
1. What?
2. So what?
3. Now What?
The first stem question that is, ‘What’ includes the description of experience that is, it includes ‘what exactly happened?’, ‘what was the action taken by the patient?’, “Was there any involvement of someone else?’, ‘Was the...
