Gold Coast and Infectious Disease
The previous Commonwealth Games that was hosted in Glasgow had set a reminder on the 2018 games which was scheduled to be held in the city of Gold Coast in terms of healthcare. The Commonwealth Games attract a huge pool of audience, of varying ethnicities, from across the globe. This sudden increase in population for such limited span of 10-15 days could give rise to potential health hazards including those of an infectious or communicable nature. The city of Gold Coast in Australia could be considered a relatively safe city with respect to the domain of healthcare. The city is well-maintained and clean. The city has been associated with having low occu
ences of infectious disease. There are provisions for good, safe and clean drinking water.
In the city, close attention is paid to public sanitation. The city also boasts of proper and hygienic waste disposal methods. The sewage and drainage systems are well-maintained. From the aspect of medical facilities, Gold Coast has one of the most well-planned, well-executed and well-structured medical facilities. Starting from first aid to management of physical as well as mental ailments, Gold Coast is well-equipped. On the other hand, the city is also safe from the viewpoint of crime against visitors and tourists.
However, in cases of events that serve to attract people from near and far, any place which would generally be regarded as safe, could become prone to the onset and dissemination of infectious diseases. The probable reason behind this would be the fact that the city, for the duration of the event, would serve as home to a diverse multitude of people, hailing from different regions of the world. For instance, in case of Gold Coast, although the city itself has low incidences of disease, influx of people from various regions may lead to the accumulation of diseased individuals and subsequent transmission of disease.
As mentioned by Becker (2017), the individuals coming in from countries with poor sanitation and health facilities may be prone to infections and themselves serve as ca
iers of infection. One such disease could be Tuberculosis. Caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the disease has two phases of being communicable as well as non-communicable. Hence, an individual ca
ying the infectious form of the disorder to Gold Coast may serve as the source of transmission of the disorder to other people, hailing from different countries. Again, there could be certain disorders that the visitors develop during their travel to the event destination. Hence, i
espective of how safe the venue of the event is, probabilities of the onset and transmission of the infectious disease would also depend upon the influx of visitors.
Infrastructure for Infection Control and Management
The infrastructure pertaining to Infectious disease could be best described as the system to be adopted in order to spread awareness and alertness among the people of a country against infectious diseases which may cause serious illness and may also prove to be fatal. The key role of this infrastructure would be to help people identify, prepare, adapt and respond to threats posed by infectious diseases. As observed by Bogoch et al. (2015), the Infrastructure, aims at addressing both ongoing as well as probable cases of communicable diseases.
It is commonly observed that the day-to-day routine of people may involve certain activities that may significantly enhance their propensities of contracting a communicable disease. For instance, eating food without washing hands or consuming contaminated water for drinking purpose when outdoor could make an individual more susceptible to infectious diseases. As noted by Althouse et al. (2015), the infrastructure co
esponding to infectious disease provides the regulations to prevent the onset of an infectious disease, identifying its onset at the very initial phase and subsequently taking necessary steps to prevent it.
These steps would also help people take mitigation measures to prevent relapse of the disease. In the absence of the infectious disease measures postulated by the infrastructure for the same, the number of episodes of the disorder would be significantly high, leading to a higher number of casualties. According to Stuart (2018), the basis of infectious disease infrastructure is the fact that the infrastructure provides for three-tier collaboration. The Federal, State as well as Local agencies and relevant private bodies, inclusive of non-profit organisations in the healthcare sector, work in a concerted manner to achieve healthcare goals.
