ief, the problems faced by them including racism and discrimination and how this impacts their health and social life. The various evidences stated links the connection between the two. Finally the report suggests clinical and social methods to improvise the healthcare setup for Indigenous people.
Introduction
The indigenous group of Australia comprises of Australian aboriginal peoples and the To
es Strait Islander people. Around 70,000 years ago Australian Aboriginal people migrated out of Africa . They have been appreciated by historians for continuing the longest religion and art forms. Today indigenous people make up 3 % of Australia's population . New South Wales has the highest indigenous population. It is supposed that the first settlement occu
ed in an era of lowered sea levels when there existed land
idges between Australia and Asia. Contrary to the expected belief of agricultural practices and fishing, archeological evidence suggests that the Aboriginal people had dynamic occupations. By 1788 when European settlement took place aboriginal people were already well adapted to climatic conditions of Australia.
There existed a wide variation in the language and cultural differences among these people. Many of the individuals were bilingual . A period between 1910 and 1970 showed a drastic fall of population of Aboriginal people as their children were forcibly removed from their homes and given to new non indigenous families. They were ba
ed from speaking their native language or practicing their own traditions. After this, continued efforts were made to
idge the gap between the indigenous people and the other citizens. The folk tales and conventional storytelling records their vi
ant culture, life and dreamtime. Their a original bark, sculpture, bark, rock paintings , beadwork are found in the Northern te
itory. According to the census conducted in 2016 the population of indigenous people have rose from 3% in 2011 to 3.3% in 2016. Considering the trends of education among indigenous people, although it is flowing in positive direction , these people still lack from the general population . At primary school level the data rose from 43.5% in 2011 to 48.5% in 2016 . Similarly at the secondary school level it rose from 51.2% in 2011 to 59.7% in 2016.
The indigenous people of Australia suffer a social, economic and cultural threat. The Australian government in 2008 committed to resolve the conflicts and addressed it as “crossing the gap”
.The gap here signifies the wide
idge that exists between the other citizens and the indigenous people. Indigenous men between the age of 25 and 29 have the highest suicide rate in the world. This is an alarming fact. Romile Mokak, CEO of the Lowitja Institute for Aboriginal an To
es Strait Islander Health Research refe
ed to it as a living tragedy in the country. The problems faced by indigenous people include – they are less likely to complete secondary education, have higher rates of drug and alcohol consumption and their life expectancy on an average is 10 years less than their non indigenous counterparts. There have been an attached stigma towards the cultural practices of indigenous people.
According to an official report published by Productivity Commission in 2016 rates of suicide, psychological distress and substance abuse are rising among indigenous Australians. Their self harm rates have grown to 56 percent in the last decade. Lately a series of 19 suspected suicides including that of a 10 year old girl had been reported in a remote western island. Stan Grant had given a speech against discrimination for indigenous people at Ethics centre and since then was acclaimed as comparable to Martin Luther King Junior. In his speech he mentioned that his white Australian grandmother had ma
