Context:

Many public health issues are complex, and influenced by multiple interrelated factors including biological, social, environmental, economic, cultural, political, health service, and policy. Public health professionals need to understand a complex issue from systems thinking perspective (a complex problem with many interconnected factors,elements), and they must work across various sectors (e.g. food, education, transport, agriculture, housing, urban planning, media), and with key stakeholders such as other professionals and community groups in order to improve population health outcomes.

Instructions:

To prepare for this assessment, choose one public health issue (e.g. diabetes, obesity, cancer, heart disease, mental health, substance misuse, air pollution, water and sanitation, road accidents, suicide, etc.) in any country and examine how systems thinking can help to identify the broader system issues, and recommend solutions for better management. This is a research- based assignment which requires to conduct literature review on the selected topic on the specific country context.

    Childhood obesity is one of the most common healthcare issues that many nations have to go through and India is one of such nations. In fact, from system’s thinking perspective, collaborative efforts are expected in order to complete the goal of taking effective preventive measures against it by the end of this decade (Dabad & Seth, 2017). At the same time, the concerns about childhood obesity are relevant in the sense that in the past two decades, the global ratio of obesity has been doubled and it has called for a global initiative against the issue. The following is an analysis of the Indian system’s thinking and various perceptions applied to the prevention of childhood obesity in children.
System’s Thinking Approach and Indian context of Childhood Obesity
The Factors of Influence
    At first, it is significant to note here that the system’s thinking approach is applied to a collaborative network of concepts and frameworks that are applicable to the alleviation of healthcare norms in a particular region or for a chosen population or health group. In fact, the overall understanding of the system’s thinking is more like perceiving an abstract ideology in which, it is assessed that how a combination of various inter-related governing bodies would take up a healthcare issue and respond to it effectively (Kanitkar, 2018). For example, in the context of childhood obesity, the selected population in India is children who have been suffering from distu
ed BMI and they are vulnerable to the onset of various obesity related issues like heart disease etc. (Scott-Sheldon et al, 2020). However, the approach of system’s thinking is to reach to the common grounds of solution i.e. though there is no visible governing body to system’s thinking, it is the combination of the efforts that government and other stakeholders have to take in order to deal with a particular healthcare issue (Dabad & Seth, 2017).
    The International Association for the Study of Obesity has identified that there are more than 200 million obese cases existing at global level in the present context, if the data is collectively analyzed. In Indian context in particular, by the end of 2025, there will be 17 million young adults who will be obese and the age range of these adults will be 6 to 19 years. The aspects of spread of childhood obesity cu
ently range from 3.6% to 19% which is alarming (Dabad & Seth, 2017). There can be as many factors as possible that may be associated with the development of childhood obesity in Indian children though, most of these influential factors are related to the common ones like the rise of nuclear families, lack of proper parenting, application of modern lifestyle and unhealthy diet patterns (Shinde, 2019).
