Introduction:
Mental health collectively defines the positive mental state of a human lead by conscious behavior along with cognitive and emotional well-being. It is highly valued and considered as important in humans because of its ability to deteriorate a life of person, if left untreated on disease acquisition. The emphasis for mental health is highly given as it is the major factor for a person to feel, connect, and understand various emotions and feelings of other persons and objects.
Yet, it is often seen that people develop negative mindset and fall in trap of mental illness. The development of mental illness is often accompanied with the excessive abuse of substance individually. It is a co-companion to exit the reality facet of life and enter a virtual euphoric sensation to combat life problems. This particular diagnosis of mental illness and substance abuse in individuals are defined by dual diagnosis. Statistically, it is recorded that approximately 20% of normal people are addicted to substance abuses such as alcohol, cocaine, heroin, nicotine, and cannabis (Kessler, 2004; Fantuzzi and Mezzini, 2020).
Whereas, comparatively with the population ground of people diagnosed with mental illness, almost 52% of individuals develop higher chances to fall in prey of substance abuse. Sometimes the order gets reversed, where people dependency on substances lead to severe mental illness and cause dual diagnosis (Matali et al., 2016). Thus, dual diagnosis is a complex disease where the initiation factor leading to companionship of another is complicated to diagnose and has to be targeted to resolve and get a better patient outcome. Scientifically, the relationship between alcohol and other drug (AOD) abuse & mental is illness is bi-directionally directly proportionated. The presence of dual diagnosis in individuals was observed and termed in the late 19th century after the globalization hits its peak achievement and left various people desperate of jobs and other financial security (Drake and Mueser, 2000).
Symptoms:
People often diagnosed with dual diagnosis have serious conduct disorders. Most of the people have difficulty in mingling and social conduct. They are pessimistic and behave instable with crowds. Their daily behavior is messy with many of them being homeless, financially instable, and highly sensitive to compliments. They incur normal speech disorders and behave violently at times (Cipriani et al., 2018; Fantuzzi and Mezzina, 2020).
Prevalence and causes of dual diagnosis:
The prevalence of dual diagnosis is often gender biased in lower socio-economic countries compared to higher developed countries. Most of the young male adults, who are unma
ied and less-educated develop these symptoms often (Matali et al., 2016; de Waal et al., 2017). Even though, education cannot be one of the determining factors to develop mental illness, they are also present in one of the causes as educational status in human being is directly equaled to the intelligence quotient (Kessler, 2004). Most of the female candidates develop the symptoms of dual diagnosis when they are sexually assaulted and undergo serious trauma. Whereas, male develop the symptoms when they are insulted among peers and disrespected among other groups of people or relatives. Sexual assault of men is rare, yet cannot be unseen from the list.
