Introduction of the Thesis Statement
Disability is an issue that spans worldwide. About one fifth of the total population of the world is disabled in different ways. When specifically, Australia is concerned, about one fourth of the total population of Australia is disabled. That means about 4 million people are disabled in Australia. Earlier, disabled were socially exempted. However, in present times advocacy and communities’ services helped starting social inclusion programs which are helpful for the people with disabilities. The essay will be covering the scenario of disability in Australia, obstacles in accessing health services, social discrimination for the disabled and lastly social inclusion of the disabled.
The Meaning of Disability
Disability is a physical or mental disorder that makes it harder for a human being to perform certain things or connect with the world around them (Kattari et al., 2018). Disabilities can be categorized into different types such as: cognitive, intellectual, physical, developmental, sensory, mental or combination of multiple factors. These impairments can be present since birth as well as it might show up during a person’s lifetime.
Disability in Australia
People living with disability in Australia are very diverse, about 4 million Australians are living with disability, which is 18 percent of the total population of the country. The risk of disability increases with the age. There is some kind of impairment present in around 1 in 8 persons under the age of 65. This translates to, the longer Australian people live, the more probably they are prone to be disabled in some or the other ways. Moreover, most people with disabilities are living below poverty line, surviving a miserable life and might have zero to low level of education (Appiah et al., 2020). Here are some facts and figures regarding disability in Australia, given below:

2. 1 in 5 (22%) have a mental or behavioural disorder as their main disabling condition,
including:
I. 6.3% with intellectual or developmental disorders
II. 4.2% with mood affective disorders
III. 2.3% with dementia or Alzheimer’s
3. 1 in 3 (32%) have severe or profound disability
4. 1 in 3 (29%) need help with health care
5. 1 in 4 (27%) need help with property maintenance
6. 1 in 4 (24%) need help with household chores
7. 1 in 2 (48%) aged 5 and over have a schooling or employment restriction
