Critical Analysis 3
The nurse practitioners help in providing health services, which are at times more than a registered nurse. They help in the diagnosis of the health condition and also treat them. Further they are capable of interpretation of the radiological and blood tests and are authorised to prescribe medications. In Australia, the nurse practitioners have high skill level and play an integral; part of the health care system. They are capable of functioning autonomously contributing values in the health services. It is observed that in Australia, nurse practitioners are considered to be one of the highest levels in the nursing hierarchy.
Although, nurses in the remote areas are trained to be able to take the role of the nurse practitioners; however, in most of the cases, a practiced nurse needs to work their way to be in the position of the nurse practitioners. Thus, it can be understood that t these group of nurses make important decision related to the healthcare services. In the study, seven articles have been selected that identifies and explains the roles of the nurse practitioners based on the standards set by the Nursing and Midwifery board in Australia as well as the regulatory agency of health care practitioner in Australia.
Nursing had developed and proliferated in the last 30 years with the increase in registration level and also with the strengthening of the standards of Practice. The main purpose of these Standards is it helps in providing a framework that helps in describing a professional practice at a specific level. The Australian Critical Care Nurse guideline (ACCCN) have been developed from the Standards of the Nursing Care for the Critically ill patients. As stated by Gill, Kendrick, Davies and Greenwood (2017), an observational procedure has been developed by the ACCCN competency standards in the process of the critical nursing care of the patients.
In the study, ca
ied out by Gill et al. (2017), the competency standards are been revised that are followed by the nurse practitioners so that the needs of the critical care are met by the nurses. This was ca
ied out following a Delphi method. In addition, the researcher ca
ied out verification of the practice standards and performance standards whose criteria was built on Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australian National Competencies.
In support to Gill et al. (2017), Gullick et al. (2018), ca
ied out review as well as synthesis of the contemporary structures in the critical care education of the nurses and their outcome. By performing Donabedian’s framework, Gullick et al. (2018), analysed the practice and the education of the nurse practitioner in providing the best possible care to the patients. While educating the nurse practitioners on the standards and policies for the workforce, there were certain processes that were included as a part of the education of the nurses to increase their efficiency.
This included patient acuity, competencies in terms of assessors and preceptors. These were ca
ied out through an evidence-based measurement of the clinical abilities and competencies of the nurses. As it has been accepted by the Australian healthcare standards that the critical care can be complex as well as multifaceted. Hence, best practices and processes needs to be implemented for the training of the nurse practitioners so that their skills m and knowledge meets the need and safety of the society. This can be achieved with the development of the CNN expertise among the nurse practitioners.
In addition, the policies and standards including the governing bodies can help in enhancing the quality of the care and reducing the variance in the care provided by the nurses. As mentioned by Cashin et al. (2017), the Australian Standards for practice for the nurse practitioners, which were reviewed in the year 2006 highlighted the importance of the national competencies for registered nurses. As stated by the NMBA, the nursing standards that has been established by the legislatures are dynamic, professional, economic and educational. Especially as emphasised by the NMBA legislature that the nurse practitioners need to monitor that they have the competencies, which have the ability to migrate the nursing workforce and health globally.
As mentioned by Cashin et al. (2017), the competency models of the nurses are attributed by the different approaches, which are activity based focusing on the apt performance of their functions. The researchers have ca
ied out a review of 40 different standard protocols followed by the Nurse practitioners to ensure that the nurses have the ability and the competencies in providing best results and care through their practices. There had been an increased advanced nursing practice. As observed by Parker and Hill (2017), the federal government has made several decisions so that the nursing education can be shifted to a hospital-based program.
