Introduction
The Journal article is about the co
elates and predictors of Missed nursing care in the Iceland hospitals. The author’s main purpose is to identify the factors like type of care unit, hospital, adequacy of staff, characteristics of staff and teamwork which contribute to the missed nursing care.
Research Problem and Its Significance
The research is based on the problem of missed Nursing care and identifies the factors responsible for it in the hospitals. The omissions in nursing care lead to several adverse events at the hospitals. Identifying the missed care instances provides essential information to the nursing management in terms of patient safety and quality of services at different hospitals.
Research Design
The author conducted a quantitative cross sectional survey study. This is a kind of observational study which shows the condition of the population (registered nurses) about which data is collected by means of survey. This specific group of clinicians’ population is looked at to assess whether missed nursing care is related to the structural factors like unit type, hospital, age of participants, level of teamwork and staffing adequacy.
Research Methods
The data was collected from the Combined MISSCARE Survey and Nursing teamwork survey in March- April 2012. This survey measures the care missed and related factors. The samples were all registered nurses and practical nurses (N=864) working in 27 surgical, medical and ICU units in 8 hospitals of Iceland. Data Analysis was done using multiple regressions testing and related statistics.
A descriptive and co
elational study was performed at the 8 hospitals of Iceland. The whole nursing staff from 27 surgical, medical and ICU units was involved in research, hence the total 864 nurses participated in study.
MISSCARE survey was used as an instrument to collect the information. The survey involved 41 assertions categorized into three fractions. The first category involved the socio demographic information that included the professional data of the participating nursing staff. The second category included the 24 assertions which were related to missed care subdivided into four groups: the interventions related to individual needs of the patients, patient education and discharge planning (17 assertions), interventions for the basic care and the interventions aimed for consistent assessment of the patient. The response rate achieved was 69.3%.
