In graph 1, the dependent variable is the number of accidents while the independent variable
is the number of drink drivers (Krugman & Wells, 2013).
Question 2
Graph 1 highlights that there is a linear relationship between the number of accidents and the
number of drink drivers. As a result the slope of the line in graph 1 would determine the
increase in accidents by increase of one additional drink driver. Thus, the increase caused by
every additional drunk driver is the same (Mankiw, 2014).
This is in sharp contrast to the non-linear relationship between the two variables of interest
indicated in the Graph 2. This advocates that at low incidence of the drink drivers, the
accidents tend to increase at a faster pace in comparison with the higher incidence where they
tend to register lower growth in accidents and at a certain point register almost zero growth.
