Introduction
Colonization, racism, identity issue, difference, and diversity as well as cultural safety are some of very common terminologies when deal with the Aboriginal and To
es Islander health. Indigenous people of the Australia had suffered from the colonization, racism, and identity issue in the history. As an outcome, health of the Indigenous people gets affected. As mentioned by Reading, and Greenwood (2018), it has been seen that health of the Indigenous people is poor compared to the health of the non-Indigenous people. The disparity between the health of Indigenous and non-Indigenous go back in the history at the time of colonization followed by racism and identity crisis. The consequences bear by the community in the present is the outcome of the struggles faced by people in the history.
Literature review
As suggested by Wood et al. (2016), when Britishers invaded the country, they get settled and form the colony by taken over the Aboriginal and To
es Islander land citing that land does not belong to any individual. In the beginning of the colonization, Indigenous population suffered from many issues. They loss the land and livelihood, and thrown out of their land to confined to the exterior part of the country. They suffered from the introduced diseases such as European disease. As an outcome, there was heavy loss of life and widespread of the ill health among the community. During colonization, they suffered from subjugation, segregation, and dispossession.
As mentioned by Shute (2017), following colonization, Indigenous people suffered from the prolonged racism. Till today, Indigenous population of the country are subjected to the interpersonal and institutional racism which resulted in the lower socioeconomic status of the community as they were derived from the economic opportunities and land ownership. It has been seen that racism both at individual level and societal level is very common towards Indigenous population.
As noted by Andersen (2019), even in the 21st century, Indigenous people are still struggling to make their prominent identity in the country. The people are known for their rich culture and reluctance to mix themselves with modern world so that their cultural identity remain intact. Historically, Indigenous population struggled to get the identity established in the country.
