Context
Healthcare has major resource implications in terms of human, time and financial resources, and is
increasingly influenced by environmental and overall sustainability concerns. Healthcare systems,
priorities and politics vary globally, impacting on the management of preventative and interventional
healthcare.
In this essay, you will examine local and global health issues and the healthcare systems and
esources in place to manage those issues. This includes consideration of the political, sustainability
and financial influences on the design, development and delivery of those health care systems and
programs. Finally, you will consider the potential impact of the chosen health issue on Australia’s
healthcare system, and identify an innovative initiative that contributes to reducing or avoiding this
issue.

 What is the potential impact on the Australian healthcare system if this issue increases
in magnitude (from local or international sources, e.g. civil wars overseas, local out

 Identify and describe an initiative that has been developed in response to this health
issue.
• Write your essay in 2,000 words (+/-10%), drawing from external resources and from the
subjects learning resources.

Guide to essay structure
This is an analytic essay in which you are asked to investigate, discuss, and analyse the topic. To do
this clearly, you are required to
eak the topic into its different elements and discuss these in
separate paragraphs or sections. Plan your essay so that is readable, clear and logically sequenced,
and with a distinct introduction, body and conclusion.

Introduction
- Introduce and provide background information on the topic (the health issue you have selected).
- Overall assessment of the topic (thesis).
- Overview of elements to be discussed (structure).
Body paragraphs: (a new paragraph for each element discussed).
- Begin with a sentence outlining the element (topic sentence); this is the main point of the
paragraph and the rest of the paragraph should relate back to it.
- Following sentences expand the discussion and provide evidence to support the topic sentence.
Do not simply present evidence, but analyse it at each stage, always relating it back to your
assessment question(s).
- Concluding sentence that also links to next paragraph.

Communicable diseases have always been an issue of great concern, since they spread fast and can cause an epidemic. However, in the 21st century, a non-communicable disease is almost causing an epidemic and that is Diabetes. Diabetes is the greatest challenge facing the Australian health system. Studies show that an approximate 1.7 million Australians have diabetes. The figure is projected to increase. Diabetes forms a great burden on both the health system as well as the financial system of our country (Magliano et al., 2009).
Diabetes is a health condition in which the body fails to process glucose properly. Glucose is a form of energy giving substance, which when processes properly supplies energy to the entire body. While diabetes in itself may not be life-threatening, it can lead to serious complications that can lead to both mo
idity and mortality (Dunbar, 2017).
This essay will
iefly describe the various characteristics of Diabetes, its types and symptoms. It will assess Diabetes as a health issue both globally and in Australia. The essay will also overlook the burden of the disease in Australia and the various measures that have been used to contain it. Finally it will provide some recommendations to remedy the cu
ent state of Diabetes in the country.
Diabetes is a non-communicable disease that can have an impact on the entire body of an individual. It is a state in which the body fails to maintain healthy levels of glucose in the blood. Lack of healthy levels of glucose can cause both long and short term complication some of which can lead to life-threatening situations.
Processing glucose requires a hormone called insulin which is either insufficiently or negligibly produced in the body of a diabetic patient. When such a patient consumes glucose, it stays in the blood and doesn’t get converted to energy. This results in high levels of glucose in the blood, also known as glycaemia. Blood glucose can be maintained through treatment and personal care. Glucose is present in foods like cereals, milk,
eads, fruit and starchy vegetables, sweets etc. (diabetesaustralia.com, 2015)
Diabetes can be classified into three types
1. Type 1 Diabetes
2. Type 2 Diabetes
3. Gestational Diabetes
Even though diabetes can be managed, it is a serious condition and mustn’t be taken lightly. The potential complications of diabetes include life threatening conditions including heart attack, depression, stroke, blindness, kidney disease and even limb amputations.
Diagnosing the disease early, proper and regular treatment and continuous management of the disease can reduce the risk of developing diabetes-related complications during a patient’s lifetime (diabetesaustralia.com, 2015).
Type 1 diabetes often occurs suddenly and can thus be very serious. Type 2 diabetes produces little to no symptoms and is often ignored until major complications are noted. Some general symptoms of Diabetes include increased thirst, frequent urination, lethargy, increased appetite, slow healing of wounds or cuts, blu
y vision, headaches, weight-loss, dizziness and leg cramps (diabetesaustralia.com, 2015).
The statistics regarding Diabetes in Australia are alarming. Some sources call it the epidemic of the 21st century while others consider it the greatest challenges faced by the Australian health authorities. These claims are not exaggeration considering the fact, that more and more Australians are being diagnosed with diabetes every day. Statistics show that nearly 280 Australians are diagnosed with diabetes each day. Last year alone, more than 100000 Australians were diagnosed as diabetic. In addition to being a health issue, diabetes has also cost the Australian health system a lot (Sainsbury et al., 2018). Every year, Australia spends nearly $14.6 billion on Diabetes (Marks, Coyne, & Pang, 2001).
Globally too, diabetes is said to be a chronic condition that is growing the fastest. Every country is witnessing the growth of Type 2 Diabetes. A study shows that diabetes resulted in the death of 1.5 million individuals globally in 2013 alone. This is an alarming result and with projected increase in diabetes, it can result in greater burden on the world population (diabetesaustralia.com, 2015).
The International Diabetes Federation’s (IDF) Diabetes Atlas estimated in 2015 that an approximate 415 million people worldwide have diabetes. The global expenditure on diabetes is estimated to be 12 percent in total. Every six seconds, a death occurs due to diabetes (diabetesaustralia.com, 2015).
