People often visits health care systems and it is also possible that a patient can visit more than 
once to a health care systems. Traditionally, hospitals used to maintain duplicate accounts of a 
patient across departments and even for multiple visits. This lead to confusion and sometimes 
fatal judgment in medication and treatment.  
With the advent of technology patient records went digital and it was made possible to store 
complete patient record in a single file which could flow through departments. Single file was 
structured in a format to permit instantaneous entree to medical records, procedures, test details 
and thus named as Master Patient Index (MPI).
