Introduction
Piperacillin / Tazobactum (Injection)
Piperacillin/Tazobactum injection is used for the treatment of pneumonia, cystic abdominal infections caused by bacteria and gynecological and can also serve severe cases of sepsis and ventilator acquired bacteria. The drug has been associated with thrombocytopenia, it is a beta-lactum antimicrobial and is found to be active against key nosocomial bacterial (Kimberley, 2014). This is one of the most frequently used antibiotics in empiric therapy for infections related to health care and falls in a class of medications commonly known penicillin antibiotics. The drug kills the infection causing bacteria from destroying piperacillin (Nguyen, 2015) but it does not work on cold, flu and viral infections.
Implications of Shortage of Piperacillin/Tazobactum
There can be adverse effects of the shortage of Tazobactum, it is an antibacterial and antibiotic combination and it is used in the intensive care. The injection is used intravenously to treat variety of conditions and this antibacterial and antibiotic drug is known by the trade name as Tazocin (Gross, 2016 ). P/T is also considered to have the low risk of C. difficile infection (Gross, 2016 ). The shortage of P/T results in high risk for CDI and at varying level of P/T shortage the result changes in the high-risk usage of antibiotic. The researches explain the shortage of Piperacillin /Tazobactum results in high use of antibiotics (Gross, 2016 ). Thus the hospitals that have been impacted by the national shortage of P/T show increase use of the agents with the high risk of CDI and shift has been found towards increasing risk antibiotic usage which is also associated with the increase in the rates of HO-CDI thus the shortage of P/T is directly associated with the harm to the patient.
