Economic Analysis of Two Interventions of Cancer 
Introduction 
Cancer has always been the worst disease for the communities and thousands of 
people die annually from this disease. The efforts have been made to find the cure for the 
disease so that the death toll can be checked significantly. The incidence of cancer is 10 new 
cases annually per 100,000 residents in a particular community. There are two interventions 
given to lower the rate of the cancer. Intervention A is meant to further purify the drinking 
water of the community so that the potential carcinogens can be removed from the water. It 
will help in lowering the new cases to five annually which is just half of the current rate. 
Intervention B is the use of a novel vaccine to inoculate the community against cancer. This 
vaccine is considered to be perfectly effective but it has extreme side effect. The vaccine can 
make the people extremely sleepy and they would not be able to work for a week. 
Ethical Issues Regarding Intervention A and B 
Cancer has evolved as one of the deadliest diseases around the world. The 
Governments are taking all necessary steps they can to minimise the damage caused by the 
disease. There are mainly two interventions suggested to uproot the disease at the broader 
level. However, there are certain ethical issues involved with both of these interventions and 
we must have to consider these while deploying one of them in place. According to 
Intervention A, the community’s drinking water is to be purified beyond its current state so 
that potential carcinogens can be removed. It will decrease the cancer rate to just 5 new cases 
annually. If we choose this intervention, it is not perfectly effective and there will still be 
people left with cancer disease. 5 people out of 100,000 will be still suffering annually with 
the disease which is still a potential figure and cannot be ignored. Secondly, it would take 
huge cost to further purify the drinking water. Impure water gives birth to many diseases and 
it should be purified but to a certain extent only. The current purity level of water is sufficient

enough for the health point of view. However, it is not sufficient to completely fight with 
cancer and some other intervention should be tried out. People pay taxes and they expect that 
their money is utilised wisely and putting too much money on water purification would not 
be a good idea (Johnson, G., 2006).   
 Intervention B, a novel vaccine is even more unethical but it can help the community 
better fight with cancer. The vaccination inoculates population against the disease but at the 
same time and can turn out to be harmful for the people. It has extreme side effect and it 
makes the subject receiving it extremely sleepy and that person cannot work for around a 
week.
