    Flannery O’Connor’s short stories “A Good Man is Hard to Find” and “Good Country People” were published together in 1955 in a collection called A Good Man is Hard to Find. Both stories share similar patterns in their exploration and representation of morality and goodness. They are about the inadequacy of traditional values in a constantly mutating modern world. The grandmother in “A Good Man is Hard to Find” thinks of herself as a good Christian woman who believes in conventional Southern values. Hulga Hopewell, the protagonist of ''Good Country People”, is a Ph.D. in philosophy who vehemently rejects all that is conventional around her. However, both stories, beginning with their titles, are concerned with what constitutes a good person or good people. The Misfit and Manly Pointer are obvious representations of evil in the stories but the other characters like that of Hulga and the grandmother have also not been depicted favourably.
    The grandmother, who serves as a foil to the Misfit, is a good person on the surface and in the eyes of the community but she is also selfish and self-centered. She forces her family to obey her every wish and takes obnoxious mesures to get her way. She...
