Schweppes Dispute: Unitarist & Pluralist Approaches
The present assignment is quite interesting wherein the two widely different yet most
distinguished approaches in employee relationships are to be studied and applied. The case under
discussion is that of Schweppes dispute which came under a lot of media glare and attention
from both the employees' side as also the employer's side.
However before deliberating on diagnosis, let me first explore these two interesting approaches
to conflict as seen from management practice perspective. While the common academic reviews
cite more than two such approaches (Farnham, 1993: pp 37), we take that the two most popular
approaches are the ones that have been given.
Unitarist Approach:
As per Ross & Balmer (2009: pp 25), this approach is of the view that there is only one
authority in an organization namely the organization's management with the opposition
leadership as a clear no-no (labou
trade unions are not considered as essential for harmonious
existence of the organizational organism) with its role limited towards enabling the loyalty &
commitment from amongst the workers. Another important assumption of this approach is that
there are no conflicts of interest between the two parties concerned.
Seen from this perspective, the action of lock-out of workers by Schweppes can be justified as a
forced action which is reactive in nature against the call made by the union for objecting to the
organizational mandate of making 12 hour shift instead of 8 hours. When the stalemate
continued, the organization authorities approached the appellate as well wishers of the workers...
