Introduction
In the business world, managing employee relations is one of the significant strategic
frameworks for the business firms, which allows them to retain the employees for long term and
minimize the level of conflicts between management and employees (Brigden, 2012). The
Schweppes dispute is one of the critical issues in the field of employee relations, which has
discussed two different perspectives and approaches of conflict between management and Union.
This essay discussed about the position of management and union in the Schweppes dispute with
the help of two different approaches of conflict such as Unitarist and Pluralist. In order to discuss
the position of management and the Union in the Schweppes dispute, the Unitarist provide a
etter overview rather than Pluralist.
Unitarist and Pluralist Approaches
According to the study given by Ross and Bamber (2009), unitarist and pluralist are two major
frames to manage employee relations. Unitarist perspective depicts that an organization has a
single source of authority, which is management and the position of union leader is not existed
(Ross and Bamber 2009). Leader and union members of the organization motivate the employees
to for theory long term loyalty and commitment with the company, but they are not authorized to
take decisions to resolve any kind of issue. Unitarist perspective influences the managers to
attain a win-win approach.
Thus, the position of management in the Schweppes dispute is associated with unitarist
perspective. It is discussed in the article of Schneiders (2011) that the company locked out 150
workers because of opposing the decision of management of introducing 12 hour shift. The
