PHYSICS 201
LAB 3: CHARLE’S LAW
ATHABASCA UNIVERSITY
1.Introduction
In this lab activity, we’ ll observe the relation between volume of gases and temperature and understand the meaning of absolute temperature. Here, we validate the Charle’s law which explains the expansion of gas with temperature and states that “the volume of a given amount of gas is directly proportional to the absolute temperature at constant pressure”. So, in this lab work using our data set we’ll validate the equation of Charle’s law as shown below:
V α T ---- [1]
Or V1/T1 = V2/T2------- [2]
2. Materials required:
To perform this lab activity following material was used
· A Graduated cylinder for measurement
· A Plastic dropper
· A temperature sensor to record the change in temperature with respect to volume.
· A Digital camera for recording the experiment
· Table salt, clear scotch tape, straw and a clear plastic containe
3. Procedure
1. Firstly, a plastic dropper was taped inside the plastic container such that it faces downward but the dropper bulb should not touch the container walls.
2. After that, salt-water solution was prepared at about 30 degrees and poured into the plastic container. The container was filled enough to cover the dropper so that the air gets trapped inside the dropper.
3.The temperature of water and level of water in the dropper (that was zero at this stage) was measured and recorded in Table 1.
4. Then, the containers were placed in the freezer and...
