Position Paper Instructions
You will write a 4-6 page formal position paper on the issue examined in the Taking
Sides text. Your position must be informed by the “Yes” and “No” sides of this issue
presented in this text, without additional outside references.
The content of your paper will include the following (see the grading ru
ic for more
detail):
1. An overall introduction to the issue/question with consideration of the audience,
purpose, and circumstances of this paper. What exactly is the issue at hand? What
is your paper going to be about? What are we looking at here?
2. Your position on the issue. What is your position? Why do you take this
position? What information supports your position in the Taking Sides reading?
3. The opposing side of the issue. What does the other side say? What are the
objections to your position? How would someone who takes a different position
make their case?
4. The refutation of the opposing side. Why are the objections raised by the
opposing side inco
ect and/or not persuasive? Are their faults in their reasoning?
Why is the information supporting the opposing side not persuasive in
comparison to your own position?
5. A summary of your position paper. How has your position developed in this
paper? Why is your position persuasive in relation to the opposing side of this
issue? What new questions or ideas have been raised from this paper?
Your paper will include these headings (co
esponding with the grading ru
ic):
Introduction
My Position
Opposing Position
Refutation of Opposing Position
Position Summary
References
*Any and all information (e.g., idea, statement, fact, figure, etc.) that comes from a
source must be appropriately cited within the content of your paper and referenced in
either APA or MLA formatting.

Introduction
The question that has been raised by the article is whether an individual's action is controlled by the environment or a free will based on his ability to react to any situation. The paper analyses both the side of the argument and analyses each of the aspects that have been put forwards by both the researchers Bargh and Chartrand (1999) as well as Amy Fisher Smith (2006). The issue is to resolve the question raised by the article whether the activity of a human can be determined by unconscious goals that have been forced by the environment.
Alternatively, it is as stated by Smith (2006), that each goal of any individual is governed by one’s goals determined by one’s behavior and thoughts. The paper supports the theory portrayed by Bargh and Chartrand (1999) related to human activities. The paper will analyze all the arguments that Bargh and Chartrand (1999) have put forwards regarding human behavior and the way of their reaction in a different situation.
My Position
The position, which I support, is the argument that Bargh and Chartrand (1999) have highlighted regarding the ways the human behaviors are influenced. According to the aspects that have been emphasized by the researchers was that an individuals’ behavior in most of the cases is not reflected by the way he consciously reacts to the situations. Rather, the individual reacts based on the factors that are processed mentally by the person. This mental processing is initiated by the environmental features that operate beyond one’s conscious guidance or awareness. In addition, to support Bargh and Chartrand’s theories, Freud stated that it has been observed that the biological impulses and an interplay of unconscious forces results in human behavior and activities.
The individual most often than not is unaware of their intrapsychic struggles and their change in the behavior in certain situations. Even the Behaviorist theory suggests that an individual’s behavior is beyond one's conscious control. In addition,...
