Q1.
Organizations depend on competitive leaders to guide them through unprecedented changes. Jacqueline Gibson in her new position as Undersecretary of Environmental Protection should make critical decisions in order to become an effective leader of the state water resources division. First, she should take an immediate action by taking charge of her position. Pardey (2012, pp. 178-179) asserts that leaders are authentic people hence she should take full control of her new position by coming up with proactive measures that are beneficial to the division. As a leader, she should not depend on the traditional management structure of her office in order to put her on the path of achievement.
In addition, in taking charge, she should focus on her strengths and her weaknesses as leadership is essentially about one’s character. Knowing her strengths will help her to find ways of assigning assignments (Gill, 2012, p. 301). For instance, if one of her strength is teamwork and loyalty, she will be most satisfied and effective working as a member of the entire team and not necessarily as a dictator. She should inspire the rest of the team by aligning their main goals with her vision. Moreover, taking charge also means taking risks. As a leader of the state of water division, she should get out of her comfort zone and create rational goals that will enable her to develop new skills.
The other strategic action that she should focus on is to develop her social intelligence, which will ensure effective communication (Mayer, 2008, p. 3). By developing social intelligence, she will be a better communicator and able to critically decide on matters and solve problems amicably. On the same point, she should be flexible to other people’s point of view, empower, and build powerful teams that will ensure the goals and vision of the division is met. Finally, by developing social intelligence, she would be in a better position to create an atmosphere of openness and collaboration that is success oriented.
