You are the paralegal in the organized crime practice in a large law firm. In the face of a looming budget deficit and likely cutbacks ahead, your lead attorney has asked you to write a memorandum justifying the future existence of the RICO criminal defense practice.

About RICO 
RICO or the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, is a federal law that 
provides for penalties and criminal punishments for actions performed while being part of an 
existing criminal organization. Primarily focusing on racketeering, it aims at trying syndicate 
leaders for crimes committed by others on the directive of the syndicate leaders. This has 
helped in overcoming a major loophole in the criminal justice arena which exempts a person 
from trial if they did not actually commit it. 
Under RICO, a person who has committed two of the 35 crimes (that falls under its purview) 
within a period of ten years can be booked for racketeering. Once proved guilty, the person 
can be sentenced to prison for 20 years and can be fined up to USD 25,000. 
Offenses that falls under the purview of RICO 
Following are few examples of offenses that fall under the purview of RICO: 
 Fraud relating to securities or bankruptcy 
 Money laundering activities 
 Terrorist activities 
 Drug trafficking 
 Criminal activities like murder, theft, rape, robbery, kidnapping, rape etc 
 Intellectual property infringement etc
